Dortmund's Gündoğan targets September return

Borussia Dortmund midfielder İlkay Gündoğan is expected to return by September after surgery on a back problem which has plagued him for almost a year.

Borussia Dortmund can count on the services of İlkay Gündoğan for the 2014/15 campaign after the midfielder underwent successful back surgery in Munich.

The 23-year-old, who was restricted to just one Bundesliga appearance last term, is expected to regain full fitness by September after "a minimal invasive procedure at the lumbar spine without complications". "Nothing should stand in Gündoğan's way before he returns to professional football," read a club statement.

The German international has registered six times in 57 league outings since joining BVB from 1. FC Nürnberg thee years ago and penned a new deal in April, tying him to the team until 2016. Jürgen Klopp's side will enter the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League at the group stage.
