Ten days to go ... final shoot-outs

UEFA.com counts down to the UEFA Champions League final in Berlin on 6 June by looking at the ten penalty shoot-outs that have taken place in the previous 59 finals.

Final countdown: 10 shoot-outs

1983/84: AS Roma 1-1 Liverpool FC (aet, Liverpool win 4-2 on pens)
• Bruce Grobbelaar's wobbly legs will forever be synonymous with the first penalty shoot-out in the history of the European Champion Clubs' Cup.

Steaua's unlikely triumph

1985/86: FC Steaua Bucureşti 0-0 FC Barcelona (aet, Steaua win 2-0 on pens)
• Steaua goalkeeper Helmut Duckadam saved all four Barcelona penalties in the Andalusian heat to produce one of the biggest upsets in the competition's history.

1987/88: PSV Eindhoven 0-0 SL Benfica (aet, PSV win 6-5 on pens)
• PSV knocked out six-time winners Real Madrid CF in the last four and then inflicted on Benfica a fourth consecutive defeat in a European final.

Crvena zvezda crowned

1990/91: FK Crvena zvezda 0-0 Olympique de Marseille (aet, Crvena zvezda win 5-3 on pens)
• A disappointing stalemate ensued in UEFA's 100th final, but Crvena zvezda prevailed in the shoot-out to become the first Yugoslav champions of Europe.

1995/96: AFC Ajax 1-1 Juventus (aet, Juventus win 4-2 on pens)
• Though Jari Litmanen cancelled out Fabrizio Ravanelli's early strike, Ajax lost out on penalties as the Bianconeri lifted the trophy for the second time.

Kahn Bayern's hero

2000/01: FC Bayern München 1-1 Valencia CF (aet, Bayern win 5-4 on pens)
• While captains Gaizka Mendieta and Stefan Effenberg traded spot kicks in normal time, Mauricio Pellegrino's miss in the shoot-out proved fatal.

2002/03: Juventus 0-0 AC Milan (aet, Milan win 3-2 on pens)
• Both sides hunkered down, and in the battle of the defences it was Milan who came out on top to become European champions for the sixth time.

The Miracle of Istanbul

2004/05: AC Milan 3-3 Liverpool FC (aet, Liverpool win 3-2 on pens)
• If the 'Miracle of Istanbul' started after half-time, the Reds still had to hold their nerve in the shoot-out – Jerzy Dudek mimicking Grobbelaar's 'spaghetti legs' did them no harm.

2007/08: Manchester United FC 1-1 Chelsea FC (aet, United win 6-5 on pens)
• Chelsea's talismanic captain John Terry had the chance to clinch it but slipped on the spot, with Edwin van der Sar's subsequent stop from Nicolas Anelka handing United the trophy.

Drogba's parting gift

2011/12: FC Bayern München 1-1 Chelsea FC (aet, Chelsea win 4-3 on pens)
• Didier Drogba equalised late in normal time then converted the winning penalty in the shoot-out with his final touch before leaving the club after eight years' service.
