Money paid
The Serie A side were initially reported to have signed the defender in July for a fee of €18m. On 1 September, the two clubs announced that with the financial details yet to be agreed, Chivu would play on loan in the Italian capital until the winter break. However, Roma have now paid the money they owed Ajax for the transfer.
Ajax statement
Ajax confirmed that the deal would go through officially on 1 January next year, when the transfer window reopens. A club statement read: "Ajax and AS Roma have sealed the definitive transfer of Cristian Chivu. The Roman club have fulfilled their duties, by paying an amount immediately, instead of the originally agreed bank guarantee."
Five-year deal
Chivu, 22, signed a five-year contract with Roma, and has made an impressive start at the Stadio Olimpico, scoring goals from free-kicks in his first two Serie A matches against Brescia Calcio and Juventus FC. He also featured in last Wednesday's 4-0 UEFA Cup first round first-leg win at home to FK Vardar.
