Late goals from Bennard Kumordzi and Jelle Vossen at the Roi Baudouin Stadium secured a 2-0 victory over Cercle Brugge KSV and a fourth Belgian Cup for KRC Genk.
Relegation-haunted Cercle Brugge held title-chasing Genk at bay for a long time, and Portuguese striker Rudy might have put the underdogs ahead in the first half-hour. Genk's Benjamin De Ceulaer then had an effort saved by Bram Verbist, while Stef Wils' header went close at the other end before the break.
Genk looked to pick up the pace after the interval, but the game looked to be destined for extra time until Kumordzi got a head to Khaleem Hyland's free-kick. Vossen then chipped Verbist to make it 2-0 in the closing stages as Genk confirmed their fourth Belgian Cup success, following wins in 1998, 2000 and 2009.
"Ten months ago I came to Genk with the goal of winning a trophy, and now I scored in the final," said Ghanaian midfielder Kumordzi. Vossen added: "This cup victory has taken a lot of pressure off us. We have worked very hard for this. This was a very tough match. Compliments to Cercle Brugge."
