UEFA Champions League knockout regulars Borussia Dortmund welcome LOSC Lille – who have progressed this far for only the third time overall but the second in four seasons – for the first leg of their round of 16 tie.

Runners-up to Real Madrid in the 2023/24 Champions League, Dortmund were tenth in this season's league phase but eased past Sporting CP in the knockout phase play-offs (3-0 a, 0-0 h) to reach the last 16 for the seventh time in nine seasons.

Lille were seventh in the league phase with a single point more than Dortmund, and are now looking to win a Champions League knockout tie for the first time.

Form guide

Dortmund

Record vs French clubs: W11 D6 L9 F32 A32
Home record vs French clubs: W7 D4 L2

Dortmund's last six games against French opponents have all involved Paris Saint-Germain – including four last season.

Having taken a point off the Ligue 1 side in the group stage (0-2 a, 1-1 h), Dortmund won 1-0 both home and away when the teams were paired again in the semi-finals.

Dortmund were unbeaten in their first six home games against French clubs (W3 D3) but have lost two of the subsequent seven matches, winning four.

BVB's record in two-legged ties against French clubs is now W4 L3; they had lost three in a row before beating Paris last season.

Dortmund are in the Champions League proper for the 19th time overall and the ninth successive season. In 2023/24 a team coached by Edin Terzić reached Dortmund's third European Cup final, losing 2-0 to Real Madrid at Wembley.

Dortmund have won ten of their last 21 home European games (D7 L4), the 7-1 Matchday 2 defeat of Celtic their biggest home Champions League victory. They have won three of their five matches this season, a 2-3 defeat by Barcelona ending a 14-game unbeaten home run that included ten wins.

European champions in 1997 and runners-up in 2013 and 2024, Dortmund have been eliminated in the last 16 in three of their last six Champions League campaigns.

A 3-1 aggregate win against PSV Eindhoven last season (1-1 a, 2-0 h) means Dortmund's Champions League round of 16 record is now W5 L4.

Lille

Record vs German clubs: W2 D4 L5 F7 A16
Away record vs German clubs: W1 D2 L3

Lille have not played German opponents since the 2021/22 group stage, when they drew 0-0 at home to Wolfsburg before a 3-1 away win – ending a seven-game run without a victory (D2 L5).

That was also their first win in Germany, on their sixth visit.

Both Lille's two-legged ties against German opponents came in 2002, the defeat by Dortmund preceding a 1-2 aggregate loss to Stuttgart in the UEFA Intertoto Cup final later that year (1-0 h, 0-2 a).

The last of Lille's seven Champions League group appearances came in 2021/22, when they won their section ahead of Salzburg, Sevilla and Wolfsburg but lost to holders Chelsea in the round of 16 (0-2 a, 1-2 h).

Those were their most recent games in the competition before this season, when they beat Fenerbahçe in the third qualifying round and Slavia Praha in the qualifying play-off, both 3-2 on aggregate.

This season's wins at Atlético (3-1) and Bologna (2-1) have made it four victories in Lille's last 13 away European games, losing five including 2-0 at Sporting CP and 2-1 at Liverpool this season.

Les Dogues' only other round of 16 appearance came in 2006/07, when they lost 0-1 home and away to Manchester United.
