There is nothing between LOSC Lille and Borussia Dortmund as the teams reconvene in northern France level at 1-1 in the UEFA Champions League round of 16.

Runners-up in last season's competition, the German side struck first at the BVB Stadion Dortmund on 4 March through Karim Adeyemi's fifth Champions League goal of the season (22) – but Lille, who have never won a knockout tie, responded through Hákon Arnar Haraldsson in the second half (68).

Form guide

Lille

Record vs German clubs: W2 D5 L5 F8 A17
Home record vs German clubs: W1 D2 L2

Before the first leg, Lille had not played German opponents since the 2021/22 group stage, when they drew 0-0 at home to Wolfsburg before a 3-1 away win – the latter their only win in eight games (D3 L5).

Both Lille's two-legged ties against German opponents came in 2002, the defeat by Dortmund preceding a 1-2 aggregate loss to Stuttgart in the UEFA Intertoto Cup final later that year (1-0 h, 0-2 a).

That first-leg win against Stuttgart is Lille's only home victory against German visitors. They have not scored in their subsequent three matches.

The last of Lille's seven Champions League group appearances came in 2021/22, when they won their section ahead of Salzburg, Sevilla and Wolfsburg but lost to holders Chelsea in the round of 16 (0-2 a, 1-2 h).

Those were their most recent games in the competition before this season, when they beat Fenerbahçe in the third qualifying round and Slavia Praha in the qualifying play-off, both 3-2 on aggregate.

The French side have won ten of their last 12 home European matches (D2), beating holders Real Madrid (1-0), Sturm Graz (3-2) and, on Matchday 8, Feyenoord (6-1) this season and are unbeaten since that second-leg loss against Chelsea in 2022 – their only home reverse in 16 games (W10 D5).

Les Dogues' only other round of 16 appearance came in 2006/07, when they lost 0-1 home and away to Manchester United.

Lille have won all three European ties in which they drew away in the first leg, most recently against Vaslui in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League qualifying play-offs (0-0 a, 2-0 h). This is the first time the away opening leg has finished 1-1.

Lille lost their only European penalty shoot-out:
3-4 v Aston Villa, 2023/24 Conference League quarter-final

Dortmund

Record vs French clubs: W11 D7 L9 F33 A33
Away record vs French clubs: W4 D2 L7

Before the first leg against Lille, Dortmund's previous six games against French opponents had all involved Paris Saint-Germain – including four last season.

Having taken a point off the Ligue 1 side in the group stage (0-2 a, 1-1 h), Dortmund won 1-0 both home and away when the teams were paired again in the semi-finals.

That second-leg victory was only Dortmund's third in their last 11 trips to France (D2 L6).

BVB's record in two-legged ties against French clubs is now W4 L3; they had lost three in a row before beating Paris last season.

Dortmund are in the Champions League proper for the 19th time overall and the ninth successive season. In 2023/24 a team coached by Edin Terzić reached Dortmund's third European Cup final, losing 2-0 to Real Madrid at Wembley.

A 3-0 win at Sporting CP in this season's knockout phase play-off first leg made it 14 victories in BVB's last 31 away European matches (D3 L14). This season they have won three and lost two.

European champions in 1997 and runners-up in 2013 and 2024, Dortmund have been eliminated in the last 16 in three of their last six Champions League campaigns.

A 3-1 aggregate win against PSV Eindhoven last season (1-1 a, 2-0 h) means Dortmund's Champions League round of 16 record is now W5 L4.

Dortmund have lost seven of the eight European ties in which they drew at home in the first leg, most recently against Liverpool in the 2015/16 Europa League quarter-finals (1-1 h, 3-4 a). That was the fourth time they had been held 1-1 at home in the first game, and the fourth aggregate defeat.

Dortmund's record in UEFA penalty shoot-outs is W2 L2:
6-5 v Auxerre, 1992/93 UEFA Cup semi-final
3-1 v Rangers, 1999/2000 UEFA Cup third round
2-4 v Club Brugge, 2003/04 Champions League third qualifying round
3-4 v Udinese, 2008/09 UEFA Cup first round
