Tottenham Hotspur take on Eintracht Frankfurt in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final aiming to reach the last four of a UEFA competition for the first time since their run to the UEFA Champions League final in 2019.

Both sides knocked out Dutch opposition in the round of 16, Spurs overcoming AZ Alkmaar 3-2 on aggregate. Frankfurt, who finished fifth in the league phase, a single point and position behind their hosts, secured a 6-2 aggregate success against Ajax.

Form guide

Tottenham

Record vs German clubs: W15 D4 L12 F42 A48
Home record vs German clubs: W9 D1 L4

Tottenham were 3-2 winners at Hoffenheim on Matchday 7 this season.

The 3-2 victory against Frankfurt was Spurs' last home encounter against a team from Germany; they had lost the previous two.

Prior to a 2-7 defeat by Bayern München in the 2019/20 Champions League group stage, the North London side had won eight of their 11 home games against German clubs, losing just twice.

Tottenham are back in European competition this season after missing out in 2023/24. They finished fourth in the league phase (W5 D2 L1) to qualify directly to the last 16, where they were drawn against AZ Alkmaar.

A 1-0 first-leg defeat in Alkmaar left Ange Postecoglou's side with work to do at home, but a 3-1 victory secured safe passage to their first appearance in a UEFA quarter-final for six years.

This is Tottenham's eighth UEFA Cup/Europa League quarter-final, equalling Liverpool's English record. They have lost their last three ties having won their first four, their last success at this stage a 4-2 aggregate defeat of Austria Wien in 1983/84 on their way to winning the competition.

The Lilywhites have lost only one of their last 19 European home matches, winning 15. In the Europa League they have won ten and drawn two of their last 12 in their own stadium.

Spurs have scored more goals (335) than any other team in UEFA Cup/Europa League history.

Eintracht Frankfurt

Record vs English clubs: W5 D5 L5 F14 A19
Away record vs English clubs: W2 D1 L4

Frankfurt's games with Tottenham in the 2022/23 Champions League are their last against a team from England. The goalless draw in Germany ended a three-game winning streak, a run that includes knocking West Ham out of the Europa League semi-finals in 2021/22 (2-1 a, 1-0 h) on their way to lifting the trophy.

Prior to that aggregate victory, Frankfurt had lost their previous four two-legged ties against English opponents, including a 3-4 penalty shoot-out defeat against Chelsea in the 2018/19 Europa League semi-finals.

Die Adler finished fifth in the league phase (W5 D1 L2), leading them to a round of 16 encounter against Ajax; a 2-1 win in Amsterdam was followed by a 4-1 home victory in which Mario Götze scored twice.

This is Frankfurt's seventh UEFA Cup/Europa League quarter-final tie, equalling Leverkusen's German record; they have won three and lost three. They have been victorious in each of their last two appearances, most recently in 2021/22 when they recorded a 4-3 aggregate victory against Barcelona (1-1 h, 3-2 a). Their other success came on away goals against Benfica in 2018/19 (2-4 a, 2-0 h).

Dino Toppmöller's side have lost only two of their last 23 Europa League matches (W14 D7) and have eight victories in their most recent 11 away matches (D1 L2).

The 2021/22 Europa League winners' only goalless draw in their last 63 European matches came against Spurs in the 2022/23 Champions League group stage.
