European Qualifiers: Spain leave it late as France, England, Germany all win

Dani Olmo struck late for Spain as several heavyweights triumphed and Denmark scored eight.

Spain had to dig deep to secure their first win of the European Qualifiers and Denmark posted a record result against Moldova as Sunday's games also brought victories for heavyweights including France, England, Germany and Italy.

Georgia 1-2 Spain

Dani Olmo's last-gasp strike gave Spain a dramatic first qualifying win after the visitors had initially fallen behind. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia finished a flowing move just before half-time to put Georgia in front, but Ferran Torres began the comeback by sliding in after the restart.

Kazakhstan 0-2 France

Highlights: Kazakhstan 0-2 France (2 mins)

France started with just two of the players who began their opening game against Ukraine, but still won comfortably thanks to Ousmane Dembélé's early strike and Sergei Maliy's headed own goal. Outstanding throughout, goalkeeper Aleksandr Mokin saved Kylian Mbappé's second-half penalty.

Denmark 8-0 Moldova

Denmark racked up their record win in qualifying for a major tournament thanks to a stellar performance from a largely second-string side. Five goals in 21 first-half minutes did the damage, with Sampdoria's Mikkel Damsgaard scoring two. Kasper Dolberg also struck twice as Denmark made it two wins from two at the start of a qualifying campaign for the first time since 1996.

Albania 0-2 England

Highlights: Albania 0-2 England (2 mins)

England made it successive wins to start their campaign thanks to Harry Kane's brave first-half header and Mason Mount’s fine finish just after the hour. Only the woodwork prevented the Tottenham forward from adding to his tally, while Etrit Berisha's smart stop turned Phil Foden's drive onto a post.

Bulgaria 0-2 Italy

Italy found Bulgaria a tough nut to crack in Sofia but led at the interval courtesy of a well-struck Andrea Belotti penalty. The hosts were equally stubborn in the second half, though they never really troubled the four-time World Cup winners, who added a late second through Manuel Locatelli's first international goal.

Germany climbed to the top of Group J following a tense and hard-fought win, Serge Gnabry's 17th-minute goal proving enough to seal the three points for the visitors despite late chances for Romania.

Sweden eased to victory to maintain their 100% start. Ludwig Augustinsson fired in the first, Alexander Isak added a second and Sebastian Larsson's penalty competed the scoring, with Bernard Berisha sent off for the hosts late on.

Poland 3-0 Andorra

Highlights: Poland 3-0 Andorra (2 mins)

Poland laboured to victory against Andorra in Group I. Robert Lewandowski netted close-range volleys either side of the break but trudged off before having his right knee iced – a potential worry ahead of Poland's trip to England on Wednesday. Substitute Karol Świderski poked in a late third as Andorra lost their 20th straight World Cup qualifier away from home.

Switzerland 1-0 Lithuania

Xherdan Shaqiri needed less than three minutes to open the scoring in this Group C encounter, but Switzerland were forced to endure a nervy night in St Gallen as Lithuania defended doggedly. The visitors were unable to stage a comeback, however, as the Swiss made it six points from two games.

Ukraine 1-1 Finland

Pukki on Finland’s confidence

Teemu Pukki's late penalty rescued a point for Finland. Dominant Ukraine eventually broke through thanks to Júnior Moraes ten minutes from time, but Vitaliy Mykolenko hauled down Pukki in the box and was sent off, allowing the striker to level it up.

Israel 1-1 Scotland

Israel had looked on course for just their fourth win in 16 internationals through Dor Peretz's screamer, but Scotland changed shape and took a point as Che Adams marked his first start for Scotland with an assist for Ryan Fraser.

Austria 3-1 Faroe Islands

Highlights: Austria 3-1 Faroe Islands (2 mins)

The home side were given an early shock when Sonni Ragnar Nattestad headed the Faroes in front from a corner early on, but Aleksandar Dragović swiftly levelled from a similar route and well-worked goals from Christoph Baumgartner and Sasa Kalajdzic gave Austria a half-time cushion they never looked like relinquishing.

San Marino 0-3 Hungary

Ádám Szalai got the ball rolling for Hungary with an early penalty following Manuel Battistini's challenge on Roland Sallai. Although San Marino goalkeeper Elia Benedettini denied Sallai from the spot soon after, the Freiburg forward made amends with a looping header in the final 20 minutes, before substitute Nemanja Nikolić converted a penalty of his own.

North Macedonia 5-0 Liechtenstein

Highlights: North Macedonia 5-0 Liechtenstein (2 mins)

The hosts ran out comprehensive winners after taking the lead via Enis Bardi's opportunistic free-kick early on. Aleksandar Trajkovski's quickfire double soon after the restart made sure of the points, with Eljif Elmas's fine finish and Ilija Nestorovski's cheeky penalty rounding off the scoring.

Netherlands returned to winning ways thanks to Steven Berghuis' stunning strike and Luuk de Jong's second-half header. The Sevilla forward was one of two Oranje players to rattle the woodwork during the first half of a dominant Dutch display, with Davy Klaassen also nodding against the bar.

Malta clung on for a famous draw in Slovakia, having been 2-0 up at the break. With 14 defeats and one draw since last winning a World Cup qualifier in 2013, the visitors scored two in five minutes through Luke Gambin and Alexander Satariano, only to be pegged back by second-half goals by Dávid Strelec and Milan Škriniar.
