Portugal have completed an excellent European showing in Chinese Taipei by reaching the second stage.
Orlando Duarte's men made sure of their place with a 5-0 success against Cuba in their final Group D match in Taipei City today. The Portuguese finished second in the section with Argentina confirming their status in pole position after a 6-1 win against Iran in Tao Yuan County.
Joel Queirós was the hero for Portugal, inspiring victory with two well-taken goals and generally offering too much expertise for the Cubans, who have never won a match at this level. The No6 stole in for the opening goal in the seventh minute and his side never looked back. His second strike, which made it 4-0, was particularly impressive as it featured a neat exchange of passes with Zézito. Also on target were Ivan and Majó before the irrepressible André fired in a late set-piece.
Later in the day, Group B concluded with the Czech Republic going down 4-1 to section winners Brazil. The Czechs had already qualified for the next phase and looked like doing so in first place when, in the third minute, Michal Mareš broke the deadlock. However, Brazil are masters at this standard of Futsal and, after a 12-minute wait for an equaliser, they struck four times without reply for victory in Tao Yuan County. Thailand beat Australia 3-2 in the other group game, played in Taipei City, to take third spot.
