Match background Only this chapter

Shakhtar Donetsk begin their home UEFA Champions League campaign buoyed by a stunning Matchday 1 upset at Real Madrid as they welcome Internazionale to Kyiv looking to avenge their heavy defeat in last season's UEFA Europa League semi-final.

• The Ukrainian side were 3-0 up at half-time in their opening Group B fixture in Madrid and, though the home side hit back strongly in the second period, held out for a 3-2 victory – only their second Matchday 1 success in their last six UEFA Champions League campaigns.

• Inter needed a 90th-minute Romelu Lukaku goal to salvage a 2-2 opening draw at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach, the Belgian's second of the night; Lukaku has now scored in nine successive matches in UEFA club competition and his last three UEFA Champions League appearances.

Previous meetings
• Lukaku and Lautaro Martínez both scored twice in Inter's 5-0 win against Shakhtar in last season's UEFA Europa League semi-final, Danilo D'Ambrosio getting the other at the Düsseldorf Arena.

• That was the clubs' third meeting in UEFA competition, Inter beating Shakhtar 3-1 on aggregate in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round when a 1-1 draw in Milan was followed by a 2-0 win in Donetsk. Shakhtar's coach at the time was Mircea Lucescu, formerly of Inter.

Form guide
• Shakhtar qualified as winners of the Ukrainian league, claiming the title for the 13th time – and fourth in a row – in 2019/20.

• UEFA Champions League quarter-finalists in 2010/11, Shakhtar are in the group stage for the 15th time and have progressed no further on ten of the previous 14 occasions, including the last two.

• The Pitmen finished third in their section in 2019/20, a 3-0 Matchday 6 defeat at home to Atalanta sending them into the UEFA Europa League. Shakhtar picked up six points in last season's group stage to finish behind Manchester City and the Italian club.

• Luís Castro's side went on to beat Benfica (2-1 h, 3-3 a) and Wolfsburg (2-1 a, 3-0 h) over two legs in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 and 16 respectively before defeating Basel 4-1 in a one-off quarter-final in Gelsenkirchen, but Inter proved too strong in their semi-final.

• Despite that opening victory in Madrid, Shakhtar have won only three of their last 14 UEFA Champions League matches (D6 L5).

• A 2-1 victory against Benfica in last season's UEFA Europa League round of 32 first leg ended Shakhtar's seven-game winless run in home European fixtures (D4 L3), though they won four in a row prior to that sequence – all in the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League.

• The Donetsk club's home record in last season's UEFA Champions League group stage was D1 L2, with those two losses, against Manchester City and Atalanta, both by a 0-3 scoreline.

• The Pitmen's record at home to Italian clubs is W5 L7, last season's loss to Atalanta following two successive 2-1 victories.

• The 2-1 win against Atalanta in Milan on Matchday 2 last season is the only time Shakhtar have avoided defeat in their last four contests with Italian sides, home and away.

• Second in Serie A in 2019/20, a point behind champions Juventus, Inter are the last Italian team to win the UEFA Champions League, in 2010 – their third European Cup triumph, and first in 45 years.

• This is the 14th time Inter have been in the group stage and the third season in a row having missed out for six consecutive years between 2011/12 and 2018/19.

• Antonio Conte's side finished third in their section last season, behind Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund after losing 2-1 at home to the Spanish side on Matchday 6. They picked up seven points from their six games.

• The Nerazzurri moved into the UEFA Europa League, beating Ludogorets 4-1 on aggregate in the round of 32 before wins in one-off ties on German soil against Getafe (2-0), Bayer Leverkusen (2-1) and Shakhtar took them into the final. Inter came up short at the last, however, going down 3-2 against Sevilla in the Cologne decider.

• Inter have won only two of their last 11 UEFA Champions League matches (D4 L5).

• The Milan club's last two UEFA Champions League campaigns have ended in the group stage, Inter finishing third in their section both last season and in 2018/19 – the first time in nine campaigns they had failed to progress.

• Despite victories in each of the last two European away matches, most recently a 2-0 success at Ludogorets in the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League round of 32, the Nerazzurri have won only four of their last 16 (D4 L8).

• Inter are undefeated in their nine UEFA encounters against Ukrainian sides (W6 D3), winning the last four. They have won three of their four away games against Ukrainian sides, the exception their first, a 1-1 draw at Dynamo Kyiv in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League group stage.

Links and trivia
• Although Lukaku scored in both of Everton's games against Dynamo Kyiv in the 2014/15 round of 16, his club lost the tie to their Ukrainian opponents 6-4 on aggregate.

• Shakhtar's Taison scored against Napoli in a 2-1 win in Kharkiv on Matchday 1 of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League.

• Nicolò Barella made his international debut for Italy in a 1-1 friendly draw against Ukraine in Genoa on 10 October 2018. Andriy Pyatov, Mykola Matviyenko, Marlos, Yevhen Konoplyanka and substitutes Taras Stepanenko and Serhiy Kryvtsov all played for the visitors.

• Inter's Ashley Young was in the England side that knocked Ukraine out of UEFA EURO 2012 with a 1-0 win in Donetsk in the final group game. Pyatov and Konoplyanka were starters for the defeated co-hosts.

• Konoplyanka scored for Ukraine against Milan Škriniar's Slovakia in a UEFA Nations League game on 16 November 2018, although Slovakia still won 4-1.

• Konoplyanka was also on target in Ukraine's 2-1 friendly win against Škriniar and Slovakia in November 2017.
