Match background Only this chapter

Early Group B leaders Shakhtar Donetsk will hope to make home advantage count as they welcome a Borussia Mönchengladbach side who have twice been pegged back by late equalisers.

• Shakhtar have taken four points from their first two games, opening with a surprise 3-2 win at Real Madrid before a goalless draw at home to Internazionale. Mönchengladbach, meanwhile, have drawn both games 2-2, conceding in the 90th minute at Inter in their opening fixture and then in the 87th and 93rd minutes to let slip a two-goal lead at home to Madrid.

• This is the sides' first fixture, and only Mönchengladbach's fifth game against a club from Ukraine.

Form guide
• Shakhtar qualified as winners of the Ukrainian league, claiming the title for the 13th time – and fourth in a row – in 2019/20.

• UEFA Champions League quarter-finalists in 2010/11, Shakhtar are in the group stage for the 15th time and have progressed no further on ten of the previous 14 occasions, including the last two.

• The Pitmen finished third in their section in 2019/20, a 3-0 Matchday 6 defeat at home to Atalanta sending them into the UEFA Europa League. Shakhtar picked up six points in last season's group stage to finish behind Manchester City and the Italian club.

• Luís Castro's side went on to beat Benfica (2-1 h, 3-3 a) and Wolfsburg (2-1 a, 3-0 h) over two legs in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 and 16 respectively before defeating Basel 4-1 in a one-off quarter-final in Gelsenkirchen, but Inter proved too strong in their semi-final.

• Despite their opening victory in Madrid, Shakhtar have won only three of their last 15 UEFA Champions League matches (D7 L5).

• A 2-1 victory against Benfica in last season's UEFA Europa League round of 32 first leg ended Shakhtar's seven-game winless run in home European fixtures (D4 L3), though they won four in a row prior to that sequence – all in the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League.

• The Donetsk club's home record in last season's UEFA Champions League group stage was D1 L2, with those two losses, against Manchester City and Atalanta, both by a 0-3 scoreline.

• This is the third season in a row in which Shakhtar have faced German opposition. In 2019/20, they defeated Wolfsburg 2-1 away and 3-0 at home in the UEFA Europa League round of 16.

• That defeat of Wolfsburg in Kyiv ended Shakhtar's run of seven successive home draws against German visitors, and made their record at home to Bundesliga clubs W3 D7 L1. Their solitary defeat came in their first UEFA Champions League match against a German club, 0-2 against Borussia Dortmund in the 2001/02 third qualifying round.

• Shakhtar were 2-1 winners against Germany's Werder Bremen in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup final.

• This is Mönchengladbach's third UEFA Champions League group stage appearance, both previous participations – in 2015/16 and 2016/17 – ending in early elimination. Fourth in their debut campaign in 2015, the German club finished third 12 months later to move into the UEFA Europa League, where they were beaten on away goals by Schalke in an all-Bundesliga round of 16 tie (1-1 a, 2-2 h).

• Mönchengladbach took part in the UEFA Europa League group stage in 2019/20, finishing third behind İstanbul Başakşehir and Roma in their section. Marco Rose's side picked up eight points (W2 D2 L2) from their six fixtures to bow out.

• The Foals have won two of their last five European games (D2 L1) but only three of the last 15 (D8 L4).

• Mönchengladbach are unbeaten in six European away games (W2 D4), since a 4-0 loss at Barcelona on Matchday 6 of the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League.

• All four of Mönchengladbach's previous fixtures against Ukrainian clubs came against Shakhtar's great domestic rivals Dynamo Kyiv. The German club lost 1-0 in Kyiv in the 1976/77 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-final first leg but went through thanks to a 2-0 win in Düsseldorf, while both sides recorded an away victory in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League play-offs, Mönchengladbach's 2-1 second-leg win in Ukraine insufficient to undo the damage of a 3-1 home defeat.

Links and trivia
• Shakhtar's Yevhen Konoplyanka played in Germany for Schalke from 2016 to 2019, where Breel Embolo was among his team-mates; his record in four Bundesliga games against Mönchengladbach was D2 L2.

• Konoplyanka scored for Sevilla in their 3-0 home defeat of Mönchengladbach in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League group stage; the reverse game ended 4-2 in favour of the German side.

• Matthias Ginter was on target in Germany's 2-1 UEFA Nations League win against Ukraine at Kyiv's NSK Olimpiyskiy, the venue for this game, on 10 October; Viktor Kovalenko and substitute Marlos played for the home side.

Latest news

• Taison's next game in UEFA club competition will be his 100th.

• On 25 August Shakhtar lost 3-1 to Dynamo Kyiv in the 2020 Ukrainian Super Cup. They have not lost since in all competitions (W4 D5) and were 4-1 winners at home to Mariupol in the Ukrainian Premier League on Friday.

• The Matchday 1 win at Madrid was a UEFA Champions League debut for Anatolii Trubin, Viktor Korniienko, Vitão, Valeriy Bondar, Heorhii Sudakov and Bogdan V'Yunnik; Sudakov and V'Yunnik were also making their first-team debuts.

• Dentinho and Davit Khocolava were both substituted with hamstring injuries on Matchday 2 against Inter and missed Shakhtar's win on Friday.

• Viktor Kovalenko scored twice in a 5-1 defeat of Lviv on 17 October but was replaced after 25 minutes due to a thigh injury and has not played since.

• Yevhen Konoplyanka (adductor) has been out since 23 September while Serhiy Kryvtsov, whose last appearance came on 27 September, has been sidelined by an unspecified injury.

• In June, Ismaily tore a cruciate ligament; he has been included in Shakhtar's UEFA Champions League squad and is expected to return to action in December.

• Having been sidelined since having surgery on his shoulder on 1 August, Vladyslav Vakula returned in that 5-1 defeat of Lviv.

• Mönchengladbach's first competitive match in 2020/21 was an 8-0 win at fourth tier Oberneuland in the first round of the German Cup on 12 September.

• A week later Gladbach lost 3-0 in Dortmund on the opening weekend of the Bundesliga season; they have picked up 11 points from their five subsequent games, including Saturday's 1-0 home win against then Bundesliga leaders Leipzig.

• Saturday's win made it seven games unbeaten in all competitions for Mönchengladbach (W3 D4).

• Hannes Wolf scored his first goal for Mönchengladbach on Saturday, against the club he left in the summer for the Foals.

• Jonas Hofmann had scored in three successive games before Matchday 2.

• Florian Neuhaus marked his Germany debut with a goal in a 3-3 friendly draw against Turkey on 7 October. Hofmann also earned his first cap for Germany, as a substitute, in the same game.

• Three days later Matthias Ginter was on target for Germany in a 2-1 UEFA Nations League win in Ukraine. He also got Mönchengladbach's winner at Mainz.

• Valentino Lazaro was a late substitute on Saturday, his first appearance since 27 August due to a calf injury.

• Andreas Poulsen (out since 15 July, shoulder) and Denis Zakaria (7 March, knee) have both been sidelined. László Bénes (out since August, ankle) is also yet to play this season, although he was on the bench on Matchday 2.
