Match background Only this chapter

Top plays bottom in Group L at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena as Hoffenheim, confirmed section winners, host a Gent side who, with five defeats out of five, will want to avoid joining the small band of teams who have suffered a UEFA Europa League whitewash.

• Hoffenheim failed to score for the first time ever in a European fixture on Matchday 5 but the 0-0 draw at Crvena zvezda, which followed four successive wins, was sufficient to seal their qualification as group winners. Meanwhile Gent's miserable run in the section continued with a 1-2 home defeat by Slovan Liberec that confirmed their fourth-place finish.

Previous meetings
• Hoffenheim's first UEFA encounter with Belgian opposition proved to be a historic occasion as they claimed their first ever European away win, beating Gent 4-1 on Matchday 2 with four different scorers. Ishak Belfodil's penalty made it 1-0 at the interval before further strikes from Florian Grillitsch, Mijat Gaćinović and Munas Dabbur. The only German on the scoresheet was Gent's Tim Kleindienst.

• This is Gent's tenth UEFA fixture against German opposition, and while they have never defeated a Bundesliga side at home in five attempts (D2 L3), they have won three out of four fixtures in Germany. They took four points off Wolfsburg in last season's UEFA Europa League group stage, winning 3-1 away with goals from Roman Yaremchuk, Laurent Depoitre and Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui, having lost twice against the same opponents in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League round of 16.

Form guide
Hoffenheim
• Sixth place in the 2019/20 Bundesliga secured a return to European football for Hoffenheim after a one-year absence, putting them in the UEFA Europa League group stage for the second time.

• Hoffenheim failed to progress from their group on their previous appearance in the competition, finishing fourth on five points in 2017/18 in a group containing Braga, Ludogorets and İstanbul Başakşehir. They also finished bottom of their UEFA Champions League group the following season with three points, behind Manchester City, Lyon and Shakhtar Donetsk. Their qualification this term means that the club will be playing springtime European football for the first time.

• Hoffenheim had scored in all of their first 18 European fixtures before the Matchday 5 shut-out in Belgrade, but despite this season's successes under new coach Sebastian Hoeness they have won only five European games, losing eight. Their home record in Europe is W3 D2 L4, two of the three wins having been recorded this season – against Crvena zvezda (2-0) and Liberec (5-0), the latter their biggest European victory.

Gent
• Runners-up in the abbreviated 2019/20 Belgian First Division A behind Club Brugge, Gent also reached the UEFA Europa League round of 32, where they went out to Roma (0-1 a, 1-1 h) having come through three qualifying rounds before finishing top of a section including Wolfsburg, St-Étienne and Olexandriya.

• Gent are competing in Europe for the sixth successive season, extending the longest sequence in the club's history. They entered the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League under new coach Wim De Decker in the third qualifying round, where they overcame Rapid Wien 2-1 at home, but were then beaten home and away by Dynamo Kyiv in the play-offs (1-2 h, 0-3 a), which confirmed a fourth participation in the UEFA Europa League group stage. They have reached the knockout phase twice, in 2016/17 and last season, having missed the cut on their first appearance in 2010/11 as well as this one.

• Gent have won just one of their last 11 European away matches (D4 L6) and only two of the 11 they have played in the UEFA Europa League group stage (D3 L6). A 1-0 defeat at Liberec on Matchday 1 was their fourth successive continental fixture outside Belgium without a goal (D1 L3), and although they managed one at Crvena zvezda last time out, it could not save them from defeat (1-2).

Links and trivia
• Hoffenheim's Algerian forward Belfodil played in Belgium for Standard Liège, scoring 17 goals in all competitions in 2016/17 – though none against Gent.

• Three Gent players have operated in Germany – skipper Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe (Hamburg 2008–09) and German imports Kleindienst (Energie Cottbus 2013–15, Freiburg 2015–19, Heidenheim 2016/17 loan & 2019/20) and Niklas Dorsch (Bayern München 2015–18, Heidenheim 2018–20).

• Dorsch and Hoffenheim's Dennis Geiger are Germany Under-21 team-mates.

• Gent are one of three clubs entering Matchday 6 of the 2020/21 UEFA Europa League without a point – together with Dundalk (Group B) and Ludogorets (J). Only four teams have ever lost all six group games in the competition – Shamrock Rovers (2011/12), Slovan Bratislava (2014/15), Metalist Kharkiv (2014/15) and Gabala (2016/17).

• Gent replaced coach De Decker at the weekend with Hein Vanhaezebrouck, the man who led the club to the Belgian league title in 2014/15 and into the UEFA Champions League round of 16 the following season.
