Two seasoned continental campaigners meet in European competition for the first time as Olympiacos, making their eighth appearance in the UEFA Europa League round of 32, take on PSV Eindhoven.
• The Greek champions lost their last five matches in UEFA Champions League Group C, but their one win, on the opening night at home to Marseille, proved sufficient to take third place above the French side. It was a more successful autumn in the UEFA Europa League for PSV, who recovered from two early defeats to win their last three matches and top Group E, just ahead of Spanish debutants Granada, on 12 points.
Previous meetings
• Olympiacos are undefeated at home to Dutch clubs in UEFA competition, winning four of their five games – all with clean sheets, all in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League – and drawing the other. This is their first fixture against opposition from the Netherlands in the UEFA Cup or UEFA Europa League.
• PSV have already played in Greece this season, losing 4-1 against PAOK in Salonika on Matchday 3 despite leading at half-time through an Eran Zahavi penalty. They won the return 3-2 in Eindhoven, however, to make their overall record against Greek clubs W8 D1 L3. The most recent of their three wins in Greece was 3-2 against Panathinaikos in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League group stage. They have won all three of their two-legged knockout ties against Greek opposition.
Form guide
Olympiacos
• Champions of Greece for the 45th time in 2019/20 – their first title since 2017 – Olympiacos also lifted the Greek Cup for the 28th time to complete their 18th domestic double. Additionally they played 16 European matches, starting their campaign in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round and ending it in the UEFA Europa League round of 16, where they were eliminated by Wolverhampton Wanderers (1-1 h, 0-1 a).
• This season Pedro Martins' side kicked off their UEFA Champions League adventure in the play-offs, where they overcame Omonia of Cyprus (2-0 h, 0-0 a), but despite opening their Group C campaign with a last-gasp 1-0 win in Piraeus against Marseille, two defeats without scoring against Porto (0-2 a, 0-2 h) and Manchester City (0-3 a, 0-1 h) limited their ambition to taking third place, which they managed on the away goals rule in their head-to-head comparison with Marseille after losing 2-1 at the Stade Vélodrome on Matchday 5.
• Through to the UEFA Europa League knockout phase following a mid-season transfer from the UEFA Champions League for the sixth time, Olympiacos have won three of their seven previous UEFA Europa League round of 32 ties – against Rubin Kazan in 2011/12 (1-0 a, 1-0 h), Osmanlıspor in 2016/17 (0-0 h, 3-0 a) and Arsenal last season (0-1 h, 2-1 a aet). The defeats have come against Levante in 2012/13 (0-3 a, 0-1 h), Dnipro in 2014/15 (0-2 a, 2-2 h), Anderlecht in 2015/16 (0-1 a, 1-2 h) and Dynamo Kyiv in 2018/19 (2-2 h, 0-1 a). Olympiacos have yet to progress beyond the round of 16.
• The Greek club's away record in the UEFA Europa League knockout phase is W4 L6, though they have not won away in Europe since their dramatic late extra-time victory at Arsenal 12 months ago (D1 L4).
PSV
• The 1988 European champions finished fourth in the curtailed 2019/20 Dutch Eredivisie, earning a place in this season's UEFA Europa League third qualifying round. Under their new German coach Roger Schmidt they won away to both Mura (5-1) and Rosenborg (2-0) to secure a record-equalling eighth group stage berth.
• Last season PSV's European campaign ended in the UEFA Europa League group stage, but this term they made further progress for the fifth time, shrugging off an opening 1-2 home defeat by Granada and that 1-4 loss at PAOK to win the reverse fixtures and also complete the double over Omonia, their 4-0 win at home to the Cypriot side on Matchday 6 enabling them to displace the Spanish club from top spot.
• The Eindhoven club have a 50% success rate in the UEFA Europa League round of 32, losing to Hamburg in 2009/10 (0-1 a, 3-2 h) and Zenit in 2014/15 (0-1 h, 0-3 a) but winning the two ties in between – against LOSC Lille in 2010/11 (2-2 a, 3-1 h) and Trabzonspor in 2011/12 (2-1 a, 4-1 h). This is PSV's first springtime appearance in European competition since they reached the UEFA Champions League round of 16 in 2015/16.
• PSV's record outside the Netherlands in the UEFA Europa League knockout phase is W2 D1 L4, with the away defeats in every case contributing towards elimination. They have won four of their five European games on the road this season, the exception that heavy defeat in Greece against PAOK.
Links and trivia
• Olympiacos's Portuguese forward Bruma is on a season-long loan to the club from PSV, for whom he has scored five goals in 35 appearances.
• Two other Olympiacos players have featured in the Eredivisie – Ögmundur Kristinsson was an Excelsior player in the second half of 2017/18 and Marios Vrousai played on loan at Willem from 2018 to 2020.
• Bruma was a team-mate of PSV goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo at RB Leipzig between 2017 and 2019.
• Rafinha (Olympiacos) and Mario Götze (PSV) played together at Bayern München from 2013 to 2016, winning the Bundesliga in each of their three seasons.
• Götze scored for Bayern in a 3-0 away win against Olympiacos in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League group stage.
• PSV's Lars Unnerstahl kept goal for Schalke in both of their wins against Olympiacos in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League group stage (2-1 a, 1-0 h).
• PSV are one of six former European Cup winners in this season's UEFA Europa League knockout phase, the others being Ajax, Benfica, Crvena zvezda, Manchester United and AC Milan. They are also one of six former UEFA Cup winners in this season's round of 32 – along with Ajax, Bayer Leverkusen, Napoli, Shakhtar Donetsk and Tottenham Hotspur.
