Match background Only this chapter

Last season's semi-finalists Shakhtar Donetsk are up against it as they trail 3-0 from the first leg against a Roma side who, led by ex-Shakhtar coach Paulo Fonseca, are looking to break through the UEFA Europa League round of 16 barrier for the first time.

• Shakhtar crossed over in the winter from the UEFA Champions League, their final tally of eight points in a congested Group B leaving them third behind Real Madrid and Borussia Mönchengladbach despite two wins against the Spanish champions. Home and away victories against Maccabi Tel-Aviv in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 mean the Ukrainian champions are in the last 16 for the second season in a row.

• Roma kicked off their 2020/21 European campaign in the UEFA Europa League group stage, registering 13 points as they topped Group A, three ahead of fellow qualifiers Young Boys. They also progressed to the round of 16 for the second successive season by winning both round of 32 legs, 2-0 away and 3-1 at home against Braga – another of Fonseca's former clubs.

Previous meetings
• Roma's fourth successive home win in the UEFA Europa League knockout phase turned out to be their biggest as they saw off Shakhtar 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico. Lorenzo Pellegrini opened the scoring midway through the first half, but the Ukrainian side were holding their own until two late goals – a Stephan El Shaarawy solo strike and a Gianluca Mancini header – sealed a comprehensive first-leg win.

• The clubs have been drawn together three times before in the UEFA Champions League, and while Shakhtar now have four wins to Roma's three, each club has won one of the two knockout ties.

• After the sides had traded home wins in the 2006/07 group stage, Shakhtar beat Roma 6-2 on aggregate (3-2 a, 3-0 h) in the 2010/11 round of 16, thus reaching the quarter-finals of the competition for the first, and as yet only, time. The Italian club avenged that defeat seven years later at the same stage with an away goals success (1-2 a, 1-0 h) as they went on to reach the semi-finals – also their best UEFA Champions League showing. Edin Džeko scored Roma's second-leg winner.

• This is Shakhtar's 29th UEFA encounter with Italian opposition (W7 D4 L17) and their seventh in the last 18 months, the three most recent before the first leg of this tie having all been against Internazionale – a 5-0 defeat in neutral Düsseldorf in last season's UEFA Europa League semi-final and two goalless draws in this term's UEFA Champions League group stage. The Pitmen have now failed to score in six of their last seven matches against Serie A sides, the exception a 2-1 win against Atalanta at the Stadio San Siro in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League group stage in which Júnior Moraes and, in added time, Manor Solomon found the net.

• Roma have also faced Shakhtar's domestic rivals Dynamo Kyiv twice in the UEFA Champions League group stage, losing both games in 2004/05 (0-3 h forfeit, 0-2 a) and winning at home (2-0) and away (4-1) three years later. Their all-time record against Ukrainian clubs is now W5 L6.

Form guide
Shakhtar
• Shakhtar, the 2008/09 UEFA Cup winners, won their fourth successive Ukrainian league title – and 13th in all – in 2019/20 to qualify for a fourth straight UEFA Champions League group stage participation.

• As in 2018/19 and 2019/20, however, they finished third in their group, the two wins against Madrid and two draws against Inter offset by a couple of heavy defeats at the hands of Mönchengladbach, the 0-6 loss in Kyiv the worst at home in their European history.

• Having switched competitions in mid-campaign last season, Luís Castro's side went on to reach the UEFA Europa League semi-finals, where they knocked out Wolfsburg in the round of 16 (2-1 a, 3-0 h) en route to their elimination by Inter. That made it two round of 16 successes out of two for Shakhtar, the club having also triumphed at the first attempt, in 2015/16, when they overcame Anderlecht (3-1 h, 1-0 a). The Pitmen had therefore won all four of their matches in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 before the first leg against Roma.

• Shakhtar's record at home in the UEFA Europa League knockout phase is W4 D4 L2, with victories in the last three. The two defeats were both in the round of 32.

• This is the first time in over a decade that Shakhtar have been defeated in the first leg of a UEFA tie away from home. They have lost 13 of the 15 previous such ties, including three times by a 3-0 scoreline. Their two successes have both come after a 1-0 defeat, most recently against CSKA Moskva in the round of 16 of their triumphant 2008/09 UEFA Cup campaign (2-0 h).

Roma
• Roma finished fifth in Serie A last term to qualify for the UEFA Europa League group stage for the second season running and fourth time in all. Fonseca's side were defeated 2-0 by eventual winners Sevilla in last season's round of 16, which remains the furthest the club has gone in the UEFA Europa League – though they were UEFA Cup runners-up in 1990/91.

• The Giallorossi made it four qualifications from as many UEFA Europa League group stage participations this term, and a third as group winners. They secured this season's round of 32 place with two group games to spare, doing the double over both Young Boys (2-1 a, 3-1 h) and CFR Cluj (5-0 h, 2-0 a) but dropping points in both games against bottom-placed CSKA-Sofia (0-0 h, 1-3 a).

• The Rome club's handsome round of 32 victory over Braga, in which Džeko opened the scoring in both legs, gave them a fourth crack at the round of 16, where they have fallen in each of their three previous sorties – against Fiorentina in 2014/15 (1-1 a, 0-3 h), Lyon in 2016/17 (2-4 a, 2-1 h) and Sevilla last season in neutral Duisburg.

• Roma's overall away record in the UEFA Europa League knockout phase is W3 D2 L2. The victory in Braga ended the club's seven-game run without a win outside Rome in springtime European football (D1 L6).

• Roma have won 27 of the 32 UEFA competition ties in which they defeated visitors to the Italian capital in the first leg, the most recent of those successes coming in last season's round of 32 against Gent (1-0 h, 1-1 a). They have been victorious on all but one of the seven occasions that they have won the initial home leg 3-0, the sole reverse coming against Carl-Zeiss Jena in the 1980/81 European Cup Winners' Cup first round (0-4 a).

Links and trivia
• El Shaarawy's next appearance in UEFA club competition will be his 50th.

• Roma coach Fonseca was in charge of Shakhtar from May 2016 to June 2019, winning the Ukrainian domestic double in each of his three seasons with the club.

• Shakhtar replaced Fonseca with Castro, who had also succeeded his fellow countryman as interim head coach of Porto in March 2014 following a spell in charge of the club's B team.

• Fonseca was in charge of the Braga team that lost twice to Shakhtar in the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League group stage (a 0-2, h 2-4).

• Roma's Armenian international midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan was a Shakhtar player from 2010 to 2013, winning the Ukrainian league and cup double in all three of his seasons there and topping the league's scoring charts with 25 goals in 2012/13. Among his team-mates were Andriy Pyatov, Taras Stepanenko, Serhiy Kryvtsov, Dentinho, Taison, Alan Patrick and Ismaily.

• Mkhitaryan also played for Shakhtar's local rivals Metalurh Donetsk in 2009/10. His record for Metalurh in three games against Shakhtar was two defeats in the league and one win in the semi-final of the Ukrainian Cup; he also lost twice to Shakhtar with Pyunik in the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League second qualifying round (0-2 h, 1-2 a).

• Pedro Rodríguez's extra-time goal helped Barcelona beat Shakhtar, with Pyatov between the posts, 1-0 in the 2009 UEFA Super Cup.

• Shakhtar and Roma are two of five clubs appearing in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 for the second successive season, along with Manchester United, Olympiacos and Rangers.

• Shakhtar are one of three former UEFA Cup winners in this season's round of 16, together with Ajax and Tottenham Hotspur. Manchester United (2016/17) are the only club in the field to have won the UEFA Europa League.

Penalty shoot-outs
• Shakhtar's record in two UEFA penalty shoot-outs is W0 L2:
1-4 v Club Brugge, 2002/03 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round
2-4 v Young Boys, 2016/17 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round

• Roma's record in four UEFA penalty shoot-outs is W1 L3:
4-2 v Norrköping, 1982/83 UEFA Cup second round
3-4 v Liverpool, 1983/84 European Champion Clubs' Cup final
3-4 v Real Zaragoza, 1986/87 European Cup Winners' Cup first round
6-7 v Arsenal, 2008/09 UEFA Champions League round of 16
