Match background Only this chapter

Hungarian champions Ferencváros will be looking to revive a faltering European campaign with a historic home win as they take on Real Betis, with the Spanish club already three points ahead of them in UEFA Europa League Group G.

• As Ferencváros failed to protect a Matchday 1 lead given to them by Ryan Mmaee's early strike at Bayer Leverkusen, losing 2-1, Betis staged a dramatic comeback from 0-2 down to beat Celtic 4-3 in Seville, goals from Juan Miranda and Borja Iglesias sandwiching a double from Juanmi.

Previous meetings
• This is the clubs' first meeting in UEFA club competition.

• Ferencváros have won only one of their eight encounters with Spanish opposition (D4 L3), although they were undefeated in Budapest until Barcelona beat them 3-0 at the Puskás Arena on Matchday 5 of last season's UEFA Champions League.

• Betis's only previous tie with Hungarian opponents came in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first round, when they beat Budapesti VSC 2-0 in both legs.

Form guide
• Champions of Hungary for the third season in a row under former coach Serhiy Rebrov – and a record 32nd time in all – in 2020/21, Ferencváros also competed in the UEFA Champions League group stage, finishing bottom of a section including Juventus, Barcelona and Dynamo Kyiv with a single point.

• Ferencváros came through three UEFA Champions League qualifying ties under new coach Peter Stöger this summer – against Prishtina (3-0 h, 3-1 a), Žalgiris Vilnius (2-0 h, 3-1 a) and Slavia Praha (2-0 h, 0-1 a) – but lost their play-off to Young Boys (2-3 a, 2-3 h). They are therefore back in the UEFA Europa League group stage, where they have competed once before, in 2019/20, when they finished third in a section including Espanyol, Ludogorets and CSKA Moskva.

• Fradi failed to win any of their three home games in that 2019/20 group campaign (D2 L1) and have yet to register a victory in Budapest in a UEFA competition group stage (D6 L5).

• Betis ended the 2020/21 Spanish Liga campaign under new coach Manuel Pellegrini in sixth place to end a two-season absence from Europe and qualify for a third crack at the UEFA Europa League group stage.

• The Seville club's only other European campaigns in the past 15 years were in the UEFA Europa League, in 2013/14 and 2018/19. On both occasions they made it through their group, reaching the round of 16 first time around, where they were ousted on penalties by city rivals and eventual winners Sevilla, then exiting in the round of 32 five years later after going down 6-4 on aggregate to Rennes (3-3 a, 1-3 h).

• Betis have lost just one of their ten away fixtures in the UEFA Europa League (W5 D4), play-offs included, but have scored only four goals in their six group stage matches, failing to find the net in half of them. In contrast they have struck seven goals in their three away games in the knockout phase.

Links and trivia
• Betis defender Víctor Ruiz's appearance against Celtic on Matchday 1 means he has now represented five clubs in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final, equalling the competition record. He previously played in the competition for Napoli, Valencia, Villarreal and Beşiktaş.

• Betis's William Carvalho was in the Portugal side that beat Hungary 3-0 in Budapest in their opening match of UEFA EURO 2020 on 15 June this year. Ferencváros's Endre Botka started for the home side, with Dávid Sigér coming on as a second-half substitute.

• Betis captain Joaquín became the eighth oldest player to appear in the UEFA Europa League, and the 13th in his forties, when he started against Celtic on Matchday 1 aged 40 years and 57 days.

• Ferencváros are one of eight reigning domestic champions competing in the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League group stage.
