Match background Only this chapter

Real Sociedad and Monaco meet in European competition for the first time after making satisfactory starts to UEFA Europa League Group B on Matchday 1.

• While Real Sociedad held PSV Eindhoven to a 2-2 draw in the Netherlands thanks to goals from Adnan Januzaj and Alexander Isak – the Swedish international's first in UEFA club competition – Monaco claimed early group leadership by winning 1-0 at home to Sturm Graz with a strike from Senegalese striker Krépin Diatta.

Previous meetings
• Real Sociedad's previous experience of French opposition is limited to four matches against the same team, Lyon. They lost both games against them in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League round of 16 (0-1 h, 0-1 a) but beat them twice in the play-offs of the same competition ten seasons later (2-0 a, 2-0 h) in what were actually consecutive European ties for the Spanish club.

• Monaco have considerably more experience of Spanish opponents, having played 22 matches against them in UEFA competition with the record W8 D4 L10. Real Sociedad are the tenth different Spanish club that they have faced.

• Although Monaco have only ever won twice in 11 visits to Spain (D1 L8), their biggest ever European away win occurred in the country – 5-0 against Deportivo La Coruña in the group stage of the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League.

Form guide
Real Sociedad
• In addition to winning the delayed 2019/20 Spanish Cup final against local rivals Athletic Club last season, Real Sociedad finished fifth in the 2020/21 Liga – one place higher than the previous campaign – to secure a second successive participation in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League. Imanol Alguacil's side were second to Napoli in their section last term before going out to eventual runners-up Manchester United in the round of 32 (0-4 h, 0-0 a).

• The Basque club are competing in the UEFA Europa League group stage for the third time. On both previous occasions they went through to the knockout phase as runners-up but progressed no further than the round of 32. Last season their tally of five goals was the lowest of all 24 teams that qualified from the group stage.

• La Real's home record in UEFA Europa League group fixtures is W3 D1 L2. Their home defeat by Manchester United in last season's round of 32 took place in Turin rather than San Sebastián.

• Third in Ligue 1 in 2020/21, five points behind champions LOSC Lille, Monaco are back in Europe after a two-season absence.

• The team from the Principality had a tenth appearance in the UEFA Champions League group stage in their sights this term, but after overcoming Sparta Praha convincingly in the third qualifying round (2-0 a, 3-1 h), Niko Kovač's side were edged out in the play-offs by Shakhtar Donetsk (0-1 h, 2-2 a aet) and are therefore competing in the UEFA Europa League stage for only the second time, after 2015/16. Then, Leonardo Jardim's side finished third in a group containing Tottenham, Anderlecht and Qarabağ.

• UEFA Champions League semi-finalists under Jardim in 2016/17, Monaco have failed to win any of their last eight away group fixtures in that competition (D4 L4) and registered no victories on the road either in the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League (D2 L1). They are, however, unbeaten on their European travels this term (W1 D1).

Links and trivia
• The clubs met this summer in a pre-season friendly at the Estadio de Anoeta on 28 July, the Spanish side prevailing 2-1 thanks to goals from Januzaj and Willian José with Aleksandr Golovin replying for the visitors.

• Monaco's squad contains a number of players with experience of Spanish football: Cesc Fàbregas (Barcelona 1997–2003, 2011–14), Wissam Ben Yedder (Sevilla 2016–19), Gelson Martins (Atlético de Madrid 2018/19), Guillermo Maripán (Alavés 2017–19) and Caio Henrique (Atlético de Madrid B 2016–18).

• Monaco goalkeeper Alexander Nübel celebrates his 25th birthday on the day of the game.

• Real Sociedad's French defender Robin Le Normand joined from Brest in 2016. He made just one appearance for the Brittany club in Ligue 2.
