Match background Only this chapter

Sturm Graz and PSV Eindhoven will both be looking to kick-start their Group B campaigns after disappointing results on opening night.

• While Sturm's first match in the UEFA Europa League group stage for a decade ended in a 1-0 defeat away to Monaco, PSV shed two precious home points as they were held 2-2 in Eindhoven by Real Sociedad, Mario Götze and Cody Gakpo opening and closing the scoring respectively.

Previous meetings
• The clubs have never met in UEFA competition.

• Sturm's record in six previous meetings with Dutch sides is W1 D1 L4, the most recent encounters yielding two defeats to Ajax (0-2 a, 1-3 h) in the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League second qualifying round.

• While PSV are unbeaten at home against Austrian opposition, their away record is W3 D1 L3. Their last visit, on Matchday 4 of the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League, ended in a 4-1 defeat by LASK Linz after they had led 1-0 at half-time.

Form guide
Sturm
• Third in last season's Austrian Bundesliga under coach Christian Ilzer, 15 points behind champions Salzburg, Sturm are back in Europe after a season away and involved once again in continental competition during the autumn after a ten-year gap.

• A UEFA Europa League play-off win against Slovenian champions Mura (3-1 a, 2-0 h) put Sturm into the group stage of the competition for the third time, their two previous appearances, in 2009/10 and 2011/12, having both resulted in fourth-place elimination. Additionally, the club from south-east Austria have been unable to negotiate the UEFA Europa League qualifying phase on six occasions.

• Sturm have won their last two European home games, having lost the previous ten – including all three in the 2011/12 group stage, against Lokomotiv Moskva (1-2), Anderlecht (0-2) and AEK Athens (1-3). Their only win at home in six UEFA Europa League group games (L5) was against Galatasaray (1-0) on Matchday 6 in 2009/10.

PSV
• PSV were runners-up to Ajax in the 2020/21 Eredivisie, finishing 16 points behind the Amsterdam club. Roger Schmidt's team coasted through two UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds this season, eliminating Galatasaray (5-1 h, 2-1 a) and Midtjylland (3-0 h, 1-0 a), but came unstuck in the play-offs against Benfica (1-2 a, 0-0 h).

• The Eindhoven club are therefore competing in the UEFA Europa League group stage for a record-equalling ninth season. They won their group for the fourth time last season, finishing ahead of Granada, PAOK and Omonoia with 12 points to make it five qualifications out of eight. Their best performance came in 2010/11, when they reached the quarter-finals.

• PSV were unbeaten in their first nine away games in the UEFA Europa League group stage (W7 D2), but have lost seven of the 15 since (W6 D2). They have also gone nine games without a victory on the road during the autumn in the UEFA Champions League (D3 L6).

Links and trivia
• PSV's Philipp Mwene made his Austria debut earlier this month and is an international team-mate of Sturm's Jakob Jantscher.

• Jantscher spent 2013/14 in the Dutch Eredivisie with NEC Nijmegen.

• Six of PSV forward Eran Zahavi's 31 goals for Israel have been scored against Austria – the most he has managed against any nation – including his first international hat-trick in a 4-2 UEFA EURO 2020 qualifying win in Haifa on 24 March 2019.

• Gregory Wüthrich (Sturm) and Yvon Mvogo (PSV) were team-mates at Swiss side Young Boys from 2014 to 2017.

• PSV's André Ramalho had two spells in Austria with Salzburg (2013–15 and 2018–21), winning five Bundesliga titles and scoring once in 21 appearances against Sturm.

• PSV's Philipp Max (28th) and Jordan Teze (22nd) both celebrate birthdays on the day of the game.

• While there are no former UEFA Europa League winners in this season's group stage, PSV are one of five clubs involved that have lifted the trophy in its former guise as the UEFA Cup; Napoli (Group C), Eintracht Frankfurt (D), Galatasaray (E) and Bayer Leverkusen (G) are the others.

• PSV are also one of four former European Cup/UEFA Champions League winners in the field – together with Marseille (Group E), Crvena zvezda (F) and Celtic (G).

• The Dutch club's ninth appearance in the UEFA Europa League group stage is a competition record they share with Lazio and Sturm’s domestic rivals Rapid Wien.

• PSV have scored 99 goals in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final, and are bidding to become the 11th club to reach the century mark.
