Match background Only this chapter

Two of south-eastern Europe's powerhouses go head to head for the first time in UEFA competition, with both Fenerbahçe and Olympiacos having got off to a positive start in UEFA Europa League Group D.

• An added-time penalty miss by Fenerbahçe's Greek international Dimitris Pelkas denied the Turkish side a Matchday 1 victory at Eintracht Frankfurt, but Mesut Özil's early goal was good enough to earn them a 1-1 draw in Germany. Olympiacos kicked off their group campaign with a 2-1 win at home to Antwerp, a late strike from Moldovan defender Oleg Reabciuk – his first European goal – settling the outcome after the visitors had equalised Youssef El-Arabi's 52nd-minute opener.

Previous meetings
• Fenerbahçe have hosted Greek opponents just three times previously and remain undefeated though they have been victorious just once, in the most recent contest, when they defeated Atromitos 3-0 (and 4-0 on aggregate) in the second leg of the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League play-offs.

• Olympiacos have won two of their five previous UEFA matches in Turkey, losing the other three. Their first three visits to Istanbul all ended in defeat but they won the most recent game there, 1-0 against İstanbul Başakşehir in the third qualifying round of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League, Giorgos Masouras scoring the winner en route to a 3-0 aggregate success.

Form guide
• Third in the 2020/21 Turkish Süper Lig, two points behind both champions Beşiktaş and runners-up Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe are back in Europe after a two-season absence to make a sixth appearance in the UEFA Europa League group stage.

• The Istanbul club entered this season's competition in the play-offs where, under new Portuguese coach Vítor Pereira, they overcame HJK Helsinki 6-2 on aggregate (1-0 h, 5-2 a), and will be looking to maintain their perfect record in the UEFA Europa League group stage, having qualified for the knockout phase on all five previous participations, most recently in 2018/19. Their standout season in the competition was in 2012/13, when they reached the semi-finals.

• Fenerbahçe are unbeaten in Istanbul in six European matches (W4 D2). Their home record in the UEFA Europa League group stage is W9 D3 L3, with no defeats in the last eight (W6 D2) and no goals conceded in the last four.

• Champions of Greece for a record-extending 46th time in 2020/21, when they finished 26 points ahead of runners-up PAOK, who defeated them 2-1 in the Greek Cup final, Olympiacos finished third in their UEFA Champions League group last term before reaching the round of 16 in the UEFA Europa League – a repeat of the previous season.

• The Piraeus giants have been involved in the UEFA Europa League knockout phase on eight occasions but this is only their third group stage participation, the previous two appearances, in 2016/17 and 2018/19, the latter under current coach Pedro Martins, having both brought further progress as section runners-up. They arrived this season via a play-off win over Slovan Bratislava (3-0 h, 2-2 a), having lost on penalties to Ludogorets in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League (1-1 h, 2-2 a) following an earlier victory over Neftçi of Azerbaijan (1-0 h, 1-0 a).

• Olympiacos have lost ten of their 18 away fixtures in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final, but have recorded two wins in the last four, both at Arsenal. In the group stage their record on the road is W2 D1 L3.

Links and trivia
• Mathieu Valbuena spent 2017/18 and 2018/19 at Fenerbahçe, registering 12 goals and 24 assists in 71 matches in all competitions before leaving to join Olympiacos.

• Fenerbahçe coach Vítor Pereira was at the Olympiacos helm for the second half of 2014/15, taking over in early January. He won the domestic double before leaving in June for the first of his two spells at Fenerbahçe. Current Olympiacos captain Andreas Bouchalakis was a member of that double-winning side.

• The clubs' Portuguese coaches faced each other four times in their homeland from 2011 to 2013, Vítor Pereira's Porto winning three league games against Pedro Martins' Marítimo with the other drawn.

• Pelkas is a Greek international who joined Fenerbahçe in October 2020 from PAOK, for whom he played nine games against Olympiacos, scoring twice – both in the first leg of the 2019/20 Greek Cup semi-final. His international team-mates in the Olympiacos squad include Bouchalakis, Masouras, Thanasis Androutsos, Marious Vrousai and Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

• Henry Onyekuru had three loan spells at Fenerbahçe's arch-rivals Galatasaray before joining Olympiacos from Monaco this summer. He faced Fenerbahçe four times in the Süper Lig, registering two goals and one assist, and played alongside current Fenerbahçe defender Serdar Aziz in 2018/19.

• Mesut Özil was an Arsenal team-mate of Papastathopoulos from July 2018 to December 2020.

• Özil set up two goals in Germany's 4-2 win against Greece in the UEFA EURO 2012 quarter-final.

• Olympiacos are one of eight reigning domestic champions competing in the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League group stage.
