Match background Only this chapter

Two of Europe's most fanatically supported clubs meet for the first time as Marseille host Galatasaray at the Stade Vélodrome on Matchday 2 of the UEFA Europa League.

• The Istanbul giants are the early Group B leaders after a 1-0 home win against Lazio, while Marseille kicked off their campaign with a 1-1 draw at Lokomotiv Moskva, conceding a late equaliser to their ten-man hosts after Turkish international Cengiz Ünder had given them the lead from the penalty spot.

Previous meetings
• Marseille have won three of their previous home games against Turkish visitors in UEFA competition, most recently overcoming Konyaspor 1-0 on Matchday 1 of the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League – a season in which they went on to reach the final. Their sole defeat was 0-1 to Galatasaray's local rivals Fenerbahçe, also in the UEFA Europa League group stage, in 2012/13.

• Galatasaray have lost seven of their ten UEFA fixtures in France (W2 D1), the heaviest of those defeats coming in the most recent encounter, in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League group stage, when Fatih Terim's side went down 5-0 to Paris Saint-Germain.

Form guide
• Fifth in last season's Ligue 1, which they completed under current coach Jorge Sampaoli, who joined in February, Marseille have returned to the UEFA Europa League for a fifth appearance in the group stage – a record for a French club – after finishing fourth in their UEFA Champions League section last season behind Manchester City, Porto and Olympiacos on three points.

• The team from the south of France have only a 50% success rate in the UEFA Europa League group stage, having progressed to the knockout phase in 2015/16 and 2017/18 – when they were runners-up, losing 3-0 in the Lyon final to Atlético de Madrid – but failing to extend their involvement beyond Christmas in both 2012/13 and on their most recent participation in 2018/19, when they picked up just one point. They have never won their UEFA Europa League group.

• Since 2017/18, when they won eight of their nine matches at the Stade Vélodrome, drawing the other, OM have lost five of their six European home games (W1), including all three in the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League, against Eintracht Frankfurt (1-2), Lazio (1-3) and Apollon Limassol (1-3). Their overall home record in the UEFA Europa League group stage is W5 D2 L5.

• Runners-up to Beşiktaş in the 2020/21 Turkish Süper Lig by the narrowest of margins, Galatasaray were unable to join their Istanbul rivals in this season's UEFA Champions League group stage as they were overwhelmed by PSV Eindhoven in the second qualifying round (1-5 a, 1-2 h). However, Terim's side ensured an autumn of UEFA Europa League involvement by subsequently defeating Saint Johnstone (1-1 h, 4-2 a) and Randers (1-1 a, 2-1 h).

• Ousted by Rangers in the play-offs of last season's UEFA Europa League (1-2 a), Galatasaray are featuring in the competition's group stage for only the second time, their debut having come in the inaugural 2009/10 season, when, under coach Frank Rijkaard, they topped their group before losing to eventual winners Atlético in the round of 32 (1-1 a, 1-2 h). The 1999/2000 UEFA Cup winners have appeared twice more in the round of 32 since then, in 2015/16 and 2018/19 – after transferring from the UEFA Champions League – but also lost those knockout ties, to Lazio and Benfica respectively.

• Galatasaray's away record in the UEFA Europa League is W6 D6 L4. They have kept a clean sheet in just one of their last ten away games in the competition.

Links and trivia
• Ünder, who made his international debut under Fatih Terim in November 2016, played in the 2016/17 Turkish Süper Lig for İstanbul Başakşehir, scoring seven goals in 32 matches. Arda Turan was a team-mate during the second half of that campaign.

• The Roma loanee is a Turkey team-mate of several Galatasaray players. Aalpaslan Öztürk, Taylan Antalyalı, Kerem Aktürkoaglu and Halil Dervişoğlu all joined him in the squad for the recent round of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

• Galatasaray's Algerian international Sofiane Feghouli was born in France and began his professional career at Grenoble (2007–10). French youth international Sacha Boey played for both Rennes and Dijon in the past two seasons.

• Feghouli played alongside Marseille's Dimitri Payet for West Ham United in 2016/17, while Patrick van Aanholt (Galatasaray) and Steve Mandanda (Marseille) were team-mates at another London club, Crystal Palace, during the same Premier League campaign.

• Marseille forward Konrad de la Fuente and Galatasaray defender DeAndre Yedlin are both current United States internationals.

• Galatasaray's Ryan Babel completed the scoring in Liverpool's 4-0 win at home to Marseille in the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League group stage. The Dutch forward's next appearance in UEFA club competition will be his 100th.

• Marseille are one of four former European Cup/UEFA Champions League winners competing in this season's UEFA Europa League group stage – together with PSV Eindhoven (Group B), their 1991 final conquerors Crvena zvezda (F), and Celtic (G).

• While there are no former UEFA Europa League winners in this season's group stage, Galatasaray are one of five clubs involved that have lifted the trophy in its former guise as the UEFA Cup; PSV Eindhoven (Group B), Napoli (C), Eintracht Frankfurt (D) and Bayer Leverkusen (G) are the others.

UEFA Nations League tickets
