Match background Only this chapter

Portuguese Cup winners Braga will hope to make amends for an opening Group F defeat as they welcome Danish side Midtjylland to the unique surroundings of the Estádio Municipal.

• Braga lost on Matchday 1 in a UEFA Europa League group for the first time as, despite Galeno's 76th-minute equaliser, they went down 2-1 to a late penalty against Crvena zvezda in Belgrade. Midtjylland, meanwhile, scored early at home to Ludogorets, courtesy of midfielder Gustav Isaksen’s first European goal, but ultimately had to settle for a share of the points in a 1-1 draw.

Previous meetings
• This is the clubs' first European meeting.

• Braga defeated Brøndby twice (4-2 a, 3-1 h), with André Horta on target in both legs, in the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League third qualifying round – their only previous pairing with Danish opposition. Midtjylland have yet to win in four previous encounters with Portuguese clubs, losing both games in Portugal, most recently 2-1 at Braga's local rivals Vitória Guimarães in a 2011/12 UEFA Europa League qualifier.

Form guide
Braga
• Braga's UEFA Europa League group stage berth, and the club's 17th European qualification in the last 18 years, was achieved on two fronts – with a fourth-placed finish in the 2020/21 Portuguese Liga and a third Portuguese Cup triumph, which they secured with a 2-0 victory over Benfica in the final. Carlos Carvalhal's side also reached the UEFA Europa League round of 32, finishing runners-up in their group to Leicester City on head-to-head record before going out to Roma (0-2 h, 1-3 a).

• The team from northern Portugal are competing in the UEFA Europa League group stage for the seventh time – and sixth in the last seven seasons. They have progressed to the knockout phase in six of those campaigns, although their best performance came in 2010/11 when they finished as runners-up to local rivals Porto after crossing over mid-season from the UEFA Champions League.

• Braga's record at home in the UEFA Europa League group stage is W11 D4 L3, with no defeats in their last seven matches (W4 D3).

Midtjylland
• Midtjylland's second place in the 2020/21 Danish Superliga, a point behind champions Brøndby, earned them the opportunity to make an immediate return to the UEFA Champions League group stage, where they participated for the first time last season. However, after overcoming Celtic in the second qualifying round (1-1 a, 2-1 h aet), Bo Henriksen's side were eliminated in the third by PSV Eindhoven (0-3 a, 0-1 h).

• This is the Danish club's second appearance in the UEFA Europa League group stage, the first, in 2015/16, having proved successful as they finished second in their section behind Napoli, albeit with just seven points, 11 fewer than the group winners. They lost in the round of 32 to Manchester United (2-1 h, 1-5 a).

• Midtjylland have lost their last three away fixtures in the UEFA Europa League proper, conceding 11 goals and scoring one, and have also been defeated in their last three on the road in the competition's play-offs. Their solitary away point in last season's UEFA Champions League group stage came in a 1-1 draw at Atalanta.

Links and trivia
• Midtjylland's Bulgarian midfielder Bozhidar Kraev has had loan spells at two Portuguese clubs – Gil Vicente (2019/20) and Famalicão (2020/21). The club's Australian forward Awer Mabil also spent 2017/18 on loan at Liga side Paços de Ferreira.

• Lucas Mineiro (Braga) and Marrony (Midtjylland) played together in their native Brazil for Vasco da Gama in 2019.

• Braga are one of six current domestic cup winners in this season's UEFA Europa League group stage.
