Match background Only this chapter

Something has to give as Real Betis and Bayer Leverkusen meet in Seville on Matchday 3 of UEFA Europa League Group G with both teams boasting a maximum six points, and plenty of goals, from their opening two fixtures.

• Betis beat Celtic 4-3 at home on Matchday 1 before overcoming Ferencváros 3-1 in Budapest a fortnight later to become the competition's top scoers after two games. Leverkusen have registered just one goal fewer, supplementing their opening 2-1 home win against the Hungarian champions with a 4-0 victory at Celtic in which teenager Florian Wirtz scored for the second consecutive game.

Previous meetings
• While the clubs have never previously faced each other in UEFA competition, Betis are unbeaten in four matches against German clubs and have won two out of two at home, though there have been no such contests since 1995.

• In contrast, this is Leverkusen's 40th UEFA match against Spanish opponents, and 34th this century. They have lost 20 of the previous 39 (W11 D8) and 12 of the 18 played in Spain (W3 D3), including the most recent – a 1-0 defeat by Atlético de Madrid on Matchday 3 of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League. Their last five visits have brought four defeats and a draw with just one goal scored.

• It was against Spanish opposition that Leverkusen won the 1987/88 UEFA Cup final, beating Espanyol 3-2 on penalties after two 3-0 home wins. They also knocked out Barcelona in the quarter-finals, winning 1-0 at the Camp Nou after a goalless first leg in what were their first UEFA encounters with a Spanish club.

Form guide
Betis
• Betis ended the 2020/21 Spanish Liga campaign under new coach Manuel Pellegrini in sixth place to end a two-season absence from Europe and qualify for a third crack at the UEFA Europa League group stage.

• The Seville club's only other European campaigns in the past 15 years were in the UEFA Europa League, in 2013/14 and 2018/19. On both occasions they made it through their group, reaching the round of 16 first time around, where they were ousted on penalties by city rivals and eventual winners Sevilla, then exiting in the round of 32 five years later after going down 6-4 on aggregate to Rennes (3-3 a, 1-3 h).

• Betis are unbeaten at home in the UEFA Europa League group stage (W4 D3), the three goals conceded against Celtic three times as many as in the previous six fixtures combined.

Leverkusen
• Sixth place in the 2020/21 Bundesliga earned Leverkusen a fourth successive participation in the UEFA Europa League. They were quarter-finalists in 2019/20 – after finishing third in their UEFA Champions League group – and round of 32 fallers last season, succumbing to Swiss champions Young Boys (3-4 a, 0-2 h), whose coach Gerardo Seoane is now in charge at the BayArena.

• This is the club's seventh appearance in the UEFA Europa League proper and fifth in the group stage – both German records. They have never failed to progress to the knockout phase, finishing top of the group in their two most recent participations, including last season when, under Peter Bosz, they amassed 15 points and scored 21 goals – one shy of Napoli's competition record – in dominating a section that also featured Slavia Praha, Nice and Hapoel Beer-Sheva.

• Leverkusen have won nine of their last 18 European away fixtures (D4 L5) and have an all-time away record in the UEFA Europa League group stage of W8 D2 L3, although they have lost once on the road in each of their last three group campaigns, most recently to Slavia Praha (0-1) in 2020/21.

Links and trivia
• Betis's Mexican international Andrés Guardado had a brief spell at Leverkusen in 2014, playing just seven matches for the club.

• Marc Bartra (Borussia Dortmund 2016–18) and Juan Miranda (Schalke 2019/20 loan) have also played for German clubs. The latter scored an own goal in a 1-1 Bundesliga draw at home to Leverkusen on 14 June 2020.

• Betis goalkeeper Claudio Bravo and Leverkusen midfielder Charles Aránguiz are fellow Chilean internationals, winning the Copa América twice together in 2015 and 2016.

• Germán Pezzella, Guido Rodríguez (both Betis), Exequiel Placios and Lucas Alario (both Leverkusen) are all Argentinian internationals who played for River Plate in 2015. All but Alario were in this year's Copa América-winning squad.

• While there are no former UEFA Europa League winners in this season's group stage, Leverkusen are one of five clubs involved that have lifted the trophy in its former guise as the UEFA Cup; PSV (Group B), Napoli (C), Eintracht Frankfurt (D) and Galatasaray (E) are the others.
