Match background Only this chapter

West Ham United have made the perfect start to their first European campaign in five years and will be looking to consolidate their position at the head of UEFA Europa League Group H as they welcome Genk to the London Stadium.

• The Hammers have posted 2-0 wins in each of their opening two matches – away to Dinamo Zagreb, at home to Rapid Wien – and are therefore three points clear of Genk, who beat Rapid 1-0 in Vienna on Matchday 1 but then crashed to a 0-3 home defeat by Dinamo.

Previous meetings
• This is the clubs' first encounter in UEFA competition.

• The Hammers have hosted Belgian opponents just once before – in their very first European match, a 1-1 draw against Gent in the preliminary round of the 1964/65 European Cup Winners' Cup that sealed a 3-2 aggregate victory in a competition they would go on to win. Their most famous confrontation with a Belgian club came in the final of the same competition 11 seasons later when they lost 4-2 to Anderlecht in Brussels.

• Genk have encountered English opposition in each of their last two UEFA Champions League group stage campaigns and have yet to record a victory. They lost 5-0 away and drew 1-1 at home against eventual winners Chelsea in 2011/12, then went down twice to Liverpool (1-4 h, 1-2 a) in 2019/20.

Form guide
West Ham
• A sixth-placed finish in the 2020/21 Premier League earned West Ham a first appearance in the group stage of a UEFA competition. On each of their last two continental campaigns, in 2015/16 and 2016/17, they were eliminated in the UEFA Europa League qualifying phase by Romanian club Astra Giurgiu.

• The East Londoners won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1964/65, beating 1860 München 2-0 in the Wembley final, and would reach the semi-finals, final and quarter-finals of that same competition over the next 16 years. The furthest they have gone in the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League was in 1999/2000, when, after qualifying as UEFA Intertoto Cup winners, they beat Osijek to reach the second round, where they lost to another Romanian club, Steaua Bucureşti (0-2 a, 0-0 h). On their last UEFA Cup appearance, in 2006/07, they were first-round fallers against Italian side Palermo (0-1 h, 0-3 a).

• The Matchday 2 victory against Rapid was West Ham's third European game at the London Stadium, making it two wins and one defeat. The Hammers' overall home record in Europe is now W18 D3 L5.

• Absent from Europe last season after a 2019/20 campaign in the UEFA Champions League group stage, Genk returned to the preliminary phase of that competition this term after finishing runners-up to Club Brugge in the Belgian league but lost both games to Shakhtar Donetsk in the third qualifying round (1-2 h, 1-2 a) – a result that transported John van den Brom's team into the UEFA Europa League group stage.

• Genk have a perfect qualifying record from the UEFA Europa League group stage, having topped their section on each of their previous four participations, in 2012/13, 2013/14, 2016/17 and 2018/19. The club's best campaign was five years ago, when they reached the quarter-finals after defeating compatriots Gent in the round of 16.

• Genk ended a run of six winless European away games, and four successive defeats, with their Matchday 1 victory in Vienna. In the UEFA Europa League group stage their record on the road is now W6 D4 L3.

Links and trivia
• Genk forward Ike Ugbo was born in the London borough of Lewisham and is a graduate of the Chelsea academy, though he never represented the club at first-team level. Instead he played on loan for lower-league clubs Barnsley, MK Dons and Scunthorpe.

• West Ham's Czech internationals Tomáš Souček and Vladimír Coufal were starters for Slavia Praha against Genk in both legs of the Czech side's 2018/19 UEFA Europa League round of 32 victory, Coufal scoring his only European goal for Slavia in the 4-1 second-leg win in Belgium that followed a goalless first leg in Prague.

• The Hammers' Ukrainian international Andriy Yarmolenko scored Dynamo Kyiv's goal in a 3-1 defeat at Genk on Matchday 5 of the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League.

• West Ham are one of just two newcomers to the UEFA Europa League proper in 2021/22, the other Brøndby in Group A.

• West Ham manager David Moyes has been successful in each of his three previous European group stages, making further progress as Everton's boss in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup and 2009/10 UEFA Europa League and with Manchester United in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League.

• The Belgian club are one of six current domestic cup winners involved in the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League group stage.
