Sliema Wanderers FC closed the gap on Hibernians FC at the top of the Maltese Premier League's championship group with a 2-0 win over Hamrun Spartans FC on Sunday.

Victory sealed
Goals either side of half-time from Brian Said and Rupert Mangion sealed the victory, which brought Sliema within a point of Hibernians, who were beaten 4-2 by Valletta FC. Adrian Mifsud had given the leaders an early advantage with his fourth-minute goal, but Valletta hit back with two from Daniel Theuma and a gem of a finish from Czech Kamil Dvorak.

Late penalty
Mifsud converted a 90th-minute penalty to give Hibernians a slither of hope but Gilbert Agius hit back to settle the result and keep the Maltese champions in the title race.
