Hibernians FC have signed former Naxxar Lions FC player-coach Edmond Lufi until the end of the season.

Further options
The Albanian defender, rated as one of the finest sweepers playing in Malta, has signed a deal to keep him with the champions until the end of the current season, with the option of a further year's contract.

Registration problem
A Hibernians FC spokesman confirmed that the player's official registration was filed yesterday at the Malta Football Association (MFA) headquarters. Lufi will not be eligible for today's crucial fixture against current leaders and title favourites Sliema Wanderers FC at the National Stadium as his registration was not filed 48 hours prior to the fixture.

Contract terminated
Lufi recently stepped down as coach of Naxxar and terminated his contract with the club. The MFA players and coaches complaints board confirmed on Thursday that the contract had been annulled.

Maltese career
Lufi started his career in Malta with Valletta FC in 1992, before moving to Hamrun Spartans FC and later on to Pietà Hotspurs FC. He took up the player-coach post at Naxxar in 2001/02 and  remained at the club for fourteen months.

Valuable experience
Lufi's vast experience will serve the champions well in their bid to get back into title contention after some disappointing recent results. The Albanian defender will take over the role of former Hibernians' captain Silvio Vella, who announced his retirement from the game earlier this season.
