UEFA’s official magazine takes us back in words and images to England in the heady days of summer for an in-depth review of the EURO – a phenomenal football festival that smashed records across the board, attracted a legion of new fans to the women’s game and ended with the host nation savouring its first major international trophy in 56 years.
UEFA President’s editorial: A legacy to protect… and cherish
“A EURO for the ages” – the words used by Aleksander Čeferin to describe the tournament.
“Now, as we take stock of July’s enthralling events in England, we can say with every justification that our expectations were not only completely fulfilled – they were in fact surpassed in remarkable fashion,” he adds.
The UEFA President hails “impressive new benchmarks registered that will hopefully add further impetus to the growth of the women’s game across Europe”, as well as the event’s amazing festive feel. “Everyone joined together as one to share in the unrivalled joy of our beautiful sport,” he reflects.
Mr Čeferin also emphasises the crucial task that now lies ahead for UEFA and its member associations – to maximise and profit from the momentum created by the EURO.
“The Women’s EURO has left us with much to savour and a host of unforgettable memories,” he reflects.
“But it is now essential that all of us with the well-being of women’s football at heart work together tirelessly to ensure that the legacy of a magical month in England is never allowed to fall into neglect. The future rests in our own hands.”
