UEFA disciplinary workshop in Lisbon strengthens cooperation

The ninth UEFA disciplinary workshop took place at the headquarters of the Portuguese Football Federation in Lisbon, Portugal, on 13 and 14 October.
UEFA’s disciplinary bodies – the Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) and Appeals Body (AB), as well as the Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors (EDIs) – were briefed about the new provisions contained in the 2022 UEFA Disciplinary Regulations. The new format of the UEFA men’s club competitions from the 2024/25 season was also presented.
Of note, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) jurisprudence involving UEFA in the 2018–22 period and the main challenges in this regard were presented and discussed, as were CAS cases related to anti-doping violations.
Notably, the attendees profited from having relevant presentations from and engagements with individuals representing clubs, fans and discrimination watchdogs. Representatives from the European Club Association, Football Supporters Europe and FARE had indeed the opportunity to address and share their views with workshop participants.
An opportunity was also seized by the members of the CEDB, the AB and the EDIs to work in break out groups to delve into subjects of specific relevance to their work allowing as such a more in-depth exchange amongst each group.
Following on from their discussions, UEFA and the participating stakeholders explored ways of strengthening cooperation in disciplinary matters.
"Gathering the main stakeholders in the field and sharing knowledge and experience between UEFA disciplinary body members as well as ethics and disciplinary inspectors is the main purpose of our disciplinary workshop and it has been extremely worthwhile," said Angelo Rigopoulos, UEFA's Managing Director of Integrity and Regulatory.
"This event offers the opportunity to examine the relevant jurisprudence and hold talks with our colleagues on common issues that we are currently facing on disciplinary matters”, added William McAuliffe, Head of Disciplinary at UEFA.
