Debreceni VSC have clinched their fifth Hungarian title in six seasons after a dramatic final day of the season when the trophy was heading to FC Videoton until eight minutes from time.
Debrecen went into their fixture at Kecskeméti FC aware that any slip-up could cost them the title and their worst nightmare seemed to be coming true as they trailed 1-0 late in the second period. With Videoton holding third-placed Győri ETO FC, the championship looked set to be decided by a play-off between Videoton and Debrecen when Győr's Lazar Stanišić struck eight minutes from time to stun the visitors.
Videoton could not find an equaliser as Debrecen limped home by a point. "We are very proud to have won the title, beating serious contenders [Videoton]," said coach András Herczeg. "It was a long season and I hope we finish it with a good performance on Wednesday." Having already lifted the League Cup, Herczeg's charges can seal the treble when they meet Zalaegerszegi TE in the Hungarian Cup final at the Puskás Stadium.
