John Connelly, who was a member of England's victorious FIFA World Cup squad in 1966 and who won domestic titles with Burnley FC and Manchester United FC, has died aged 74.
Manchester United announced that the winger passed away peacefully at home earlier today. Connelly earned the last of his 20 caps in England's opening match of that World Cup tournament, a 0-0 draw with Uruguay at Wembley. He was Burnley's top scorer when they won the English title in 1960 and helped them to the European Champion Clubs' Cup quarter-finals the following season.
He joined United in 1964 and lifted the championship in his first term at Old Trafford, playing in every match alongside the likes of Denis Law, George Best and Bobby Charlton. He reached the 1966 Champion Clubs' Cup semis with the Red Devils and also had spells at Blackburn Rovers FC and Bury FC. Earlier this month Helmut Haller, who scored against England in the 1966 final, died aged 73.
