Kanu coup for West Brom

Members

English side West Bromwich Albion FC have signed striker Nwankwo Kanu and Hungary captain Zoltán Gera.

Free agent
The 27-year-old Nigerian international was released by Arsenal this summer, five and a half seasons after moving to London from FC Internazionale. He has signed a three-year contract with newly-promoted West Brom to become their sixth summer signing.

Step forward
Manager Gary Megson was delighted to make such a high-profile addition to his squad. "It takes us forward not just one step but quite a few," he said. "I think the reasons he's joining us are footballing ones. It's a major coup for this club."

Successful career
Kanu started his career at AFC Ajax, where he played in consecutive UEFA Champions League finals in 1995 and 1996 before switching to Inter. He lifted the UEFA Cup with the Italian side in 1998, then transferred to Arsenal in January 1999. He won two English titles and one FA Cup with Arsène Wenger's men.

Gera switch
Meanwhile, Gera joins from Hungarian champions Ferencvárosi TC for €2.3m. Megson said of the 25-year-old: "I am pleased Zoltán has agreed to join us, he wants to prove himself in England. He is an all-round midfielder who has an eye for getting forward. Hopefully he will prove to be what we think he can be."
