Agreed terms
"The agreement between the two clubs has been confirmed," said Birmingham's managing director Karren Brady before she left Madrid on Thursday following a meeting with Atlético officials. "All that remains is for the player to agree personal terms with Atlético and undergo a medical."
Birmingham loss
Grønkjær joined Birmingham from Chelsea FC for €3.2m last July but despite featuring in 18 of Birmingham's 19 league and cup matches this season, he has not settled. Spanish media have reported the fee involved as €2m and although that would represent a loss for Birmingham, manager Steve Bruce has approved the transfer.
Ideal role
Despite the 27-year-old's struggles this season, Atlético coach César Ferrando believes Grønkjær will provide an outlet for his team as an orthodox winger, and is reported to have made a specific request for the club to sign him.
