Bayer 04 Leverkusen have announced they will sign striker Theofanis Gekas from fellow Bundesliga side VfL Bochum 1848 this summer.
'Giant loss'
"We have reached an agreement with Bochum," said Leverkusen's sporting director Rudi Völler. "Gekas will sign a four-year contract with us." The 26-year-old has been a huge success since joining Bochum on loan from Panathinaikos FC last summer. Having plundered 18 goals in 28 appearances this season the Greek international is currently the Bundesliga's top scorer and has made a major contribution to his side's continuing battle against relegation. "It is a giant loss for us to see him go," said Bochum coach Marcel Koller. "It is difficult to find players who score regularly." Gekas, whose new side lie fifth in the Bundesliga, made two brief UEFA Champions League appearances with Panathinaikos in 2005/06.
