Austrian champions FC Salzburg have sacked assistant coach Lothar Matthäus with immediate effect citing "different ideas" over training and future planning.

Coaching duo
The 46-year-old former German international had been working as part of a celebrated coaching duo with Giovanni Trapattoni, but he has been dismissed on the day the club started their 2007/08 pre-season training campaign. The club said "different ideas over how training is conducted and future strategic decisions" heralded his departure with a year to run on his contract.

'Calm and harmony'
"We have taken this decision to bring calm and harmony to the club with just a few weeks to go before what may be the most important season the club will play," said general manager Oliver Kreuzer. Salzburg will start their UEFA Champions League campaign in the second qualifying round. Two-time FIFA World Player of the Year Matthäus, capped a record 150 times by his country, was appointed along with Trapattoni in May 2006.
