Charlton Athletic FC have signed Ipswich Town FC defender Hermann Hreidarsson in a deal worth €1.3m.

Terms agreed
The 28-year-old player agreed personal terms and signed a three-and-a-quarter year contract with the Premiership club after undergoing a medical today. A percentage of the fee will be paid now, with the remainder being handed over if Charlton are still in the Premiership at the end of the 2003/04 season.

London return
The move to The Valley represents a return to south London for the Icelandic international, who was first brought to England by Crystal Palace FC in 1997. Since then, Hreidarsson also played for Brentford FC and Wimbledon FC before switching to Portman Road in 2000.

Knee injury
Hreidarsson has won more than 40 caps for his country and missed only two Premiership matches for Ipswich during their two-season spell in the top flight. He recently sustained a deep cut to his knee and will not be available for Iceland's UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifier against Scotland on Saturday 29 March.

Transfer window
As a Premiership club, Charlton can only sign players from outside the top flight while the transfer window is closed. Alan Curbishley's side are seventh in the division with seven matches remaining.
