Portsmouth back in the big time

Portsmouth FC sealed their return to English football's top flight for the first time in 15 years with a 1-0 first division victory against Burnley FC last night.

Todorov winner
Bulgarian striker Svetoslav Todorov scored the winning goal after 73 minutes, coverting a left-wing cross from close range for his 20th goal of the season. Portsmouth returned to the top of the table, two points above Leicester City FC, who would have secured the other automatic promotion berth if third-placed Sheffield United FC had not beaten Nottingham Forest FC 1-0.

Penalty miss
Portsmouth's former English international Paul Merson struck an early penalty against the crossbar at Fratton Park, but the home side struggled to create opportunities from then on. The game looked to be heading for a draw until Todorov's late goal sealed promotion to the Premiership for Harry Redknapp's side, who had led the table since August before being overtaken by Leicester last weekend.
