Újpesti TE took the honours for the top performance of round eight of the Hungarian first division after a 7-2 thumping of Kispest Honvéd FC on Saturday.

Újpesti TE took the honours for the top performance of round eight of the Hungarian first division after a 7-2 thumping of Kispest Honvéd FC.

Tokody on target
Leading 3-1 at half time, the home side ran riot after the break to leave the visitors languishing in the bottom three. Tibor Tokody opened the scoring after 15 minutes with a well-taken strike and the advantage was doubled two minutes later when Robert Vagner fired home.

Farago scores
Honvéd pulled a goal back in the 26th minute thanks to István Farangó but Frantisek Kunzo restored Újpesti's two-goal advantage six minutes before the break. The home side were caught cold four minutes after the restart as Marius Sasu pounced but it was to be little consolation for what was to follow.

Pressure increases
Újpesti regained their composure and began to pile on the pressure against Honvéd, who had conceded 15 goals in seven games before today. Zsolt Dvéri made it 4-2 nine minutes after the restart and Zsolt Low was on hand to lash in a fifth just past the hour. The visitors conceded two more goals in the final 15 minutes as Kunzo grabbed his second and László Medgyesi rounded off a happy afternoon for the home fans.

Zalaegerszegi miss out
Elsewhere, Zalaegerszegi TE missed the chance to go to the top of the table after going down 3-2 at MFC Sopron. With leaders MTK Hungária FC not playing until Sunday, their closest rivals failed to impose themselves on their hosts and found themselves a goal down at the break following Lubomir Orabinec's 26th-minute effort.

Hopes dashed
It got worse for Zalaegerszegi seven minutes after the restart when Miklós Tóth slid the ball home but the visitors looked to have earned themselves a share of the spoils with a brace from Gabor Egressy. Their hopes were dashed seven minutes from time, however, when Akos Csiszár scored the winner.

Warm up for European hopefuls
UEFA Cup hopefuls Debreceni VSC warmed up for their first round clash with FC Girondins de Bordeaux in France next Thursday with a 1-0 vistory over high-flying Ferencvárosi TC. Their second victory of the season was confirmed after 74 minutes when Atilla Kuttor netted the only goal of the game. In the final game of the day, Dunaferr SE failed to break down a stubborn Györi ETO FC side who have won only one game this season and had to be content with a 0-0 draw.

Vasas lose again
In Friday's game Vasas SC fell to yet another defeat, this time 1-0 at Haladás VFC. The result saw Haladás move to fourth place, within five points of leaders MTK, who drew 0-0 with Videoton FCF on Sunday. Videoton remain in fifth following the draw. Meanwhile Vasas remain bottom, three points adrift of Györi ETO FC.
