Taylor sacked by Leicester

Members

Leicester City FC have sacked manager Peter Taylor following the club's poor start to the English FA Premiership season.

Decision on Sunday
The decision, confirmed in a statement to the London Stock Exchange on Monday, was taken after a meeting between the former England caretaker coach and his chairman John Elsom late on Sunday.

Terrible start
Taylor becomes the first managerial casualty in the Premier League since the start of the new campaign on August 18. Bottom club Leicester have made a terrible start to the season, taking only five points out of a possible 24 with just one win.

Head on the block
Taylor's head has been on the block for a number of weeks but he hung on when Leicester temporarily halted their slide with a last-gasp 3-2 victory over Derby County FC two weeks ago.

Defeat at Charlton
But on Saturday they were beaten again, 2-0 at Charlton Athletic FC, for their 15th defeat in 16 away games.

England role
Taylor, the former England Under-21 coach, took over in June 2000 when Martin O'Neill left the Filbert Street club for Celtic FC. Taylor made an impressive start - taking Leicester to the top of the league 12 months ago - and acted as England's caretaker coach for last November's friendly against Italy in Turin.

Wycombe blow
However, a home defeat to second division Wycombe Wanderers FC in the FA Cup quarter-finals in March precipitated a dismal run of nine defeats in 10 games.

Bolton battering
Taylor left his position as one of Sven-Göran Eriksson's England assistants to concentrate on his club duties but could not have made a worse start to the new campaign as his side were crushed 5-0 at home by promoted Bolton Wanderers FC, the bookmakers' favourites for an immediate return to the First Division, in their opening game.

Last words
Taylor said prophetically before Saturday's match: "Every game we have at the moment is a big one but the Charlton one is now massive for us."
