Replaces Taylor
The 57-year-old former Wimbledon FC, Sheffield United FC, Nottingham Forest FC and Barnsley FC manager replaces Peter Taylor who was sacked on 30 September.
Bottom of the Premiership
Bassett faces a tough task reviving Leicester, who sit bottom of the Premiership with just five points from a possible 24 so far this season and lost 6-0 at home to Leeds United in the League Cup on Tuesday.
Basett 'delighted'
"I'm delighted to be joining Leicester," said Bassett, who has signed a two-year contract. "It's a good opportunity for me and a challenge. I've been in this situation before and I've got out of it before."
'Vastly experienced'
Leicester chairman John Elsom said: "Dave needs no introduction. He is vastly experienced in top-flight football and we believe he has the attributes that this club particularly requires at the present time."
Adams becomes assistant
Micky Adams, who worked alongside Bassett at Forest, has left his job as manager of second division Brighton & Hove Albion FC to become Bassett's assistant at Filbert Street.
'Young sexy one'
Elsom confirmed that the plan was for the 39-year-old Adams, whose contract runs until 2004, to eventually succeed Bassett. "Micky's the young sexy one and I'm the old codger," said Bassett.
Chelsea first up
Their first game in charge will be Saturday's league visit to Chelsea FC - a team Bassett watched in action at Coventry City FC on Tuesday night.
