UEFA has announced a net profit of CHF79m (€53m) for the EURO 2000™ final tournament in Belgium and the Netherlands – and intends to allocate increased funds to its member associations as a result.
ISL amount not included
In announcing the figures to the Conference of Presidents and General Secretaries of UEFA Member Associations in Prague, UEFA treasurer Mathieu Sprengers said the amount did not include some CHF22m which UEFA is seeking in bankruptcy proceedings from EURO 2000™ marketing agency ISL, which collapsed earlier this year. This amount is now being deducted from the gross profit of CHF101m.
Positive effects
UEFA Chief Executive Gerhard Aigner said that in the light of the profit, the UEFA Executive Committee had therefore decided to make higher annual payments from the European Championship proceeds to UEFA’s 51 member countries. “The financial result from EURO 2000™ will have positive effects for the national associations,” said Mr Aigner.
Higher payment in December
“At the present time, we give each association CHF300,000 per year from EURO,” said the UEFA Chief Executive. “However, the next payment in December will be CHF325,000 per association.” He added: “In 2002, the payment will be CHF350,000 and this will increase to CHF375,000 in 2003.”
