Replaces Goikoetxea
The former Real Valladolid coach has signed a contract with Rayo until the end of the season as he fills the vacancy left by the sacking of Andoni Goikoetxea, who departed the Madrid club on Sunday.
Second time
This is the second time in a year that the 45-year-old has succeeded Goikoetxea at a club: he replaced him at Racing Santander last December but was himself axed from the post before the season's end as the Racing fought vainly against relegation.
Rayo struggling
Goikoetxea only joined Rayo in July but his short reign was dogged by dressing-room politics and the club sit second from bottom of the Primera División after collecting just one point from their five games.
