Nine points adrift
The German coach, who is in his second spell in charge of the club, told the Besiktas board that he was resigning after Wednesday night's shock 2-1 defeat to Samsunspor, which left his side nine points behind league leaders Galatasaray SK after just seven games of the 1. Lig season. However, club president Serdar Bilgili persuaded him to reconsider his decision and Daum agreed to stay.
Sinan explains
Besiktas team manager Sinan Engin said: "Daum told us: 'It will not be a good day for you. I am resigning.' But Serdar Bilgili talked to him and Daum agreed to take his resignation back. He is back in charge of the team again."
Three targets
Stuttgart success
Born in Oelsnitz-Erzgebirge, Germany, in 1953, Daum first made his name at 1. FC Köln, where he was head coach from 1986-90. He went on to win the 1. Bundesliga with SV Stuttgarter Kickers in 1992.
Leaves for Turkey
In 1994, Daum left for Turkey to coach Besiktas and led the side to victory in the Turkish Cup the same year and the first division title in 1995. He returned to Germany in 1996 to coach Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Although the Bundesliga title eluded him, Leverkusen never finished lower than fourth in the league during the four seasons when he was in charge.
Drugs test
Daum was originally due to take over as coach of the German national team at the end of the 2000/01 season, but his position was compromised by a positive drugs test which also led to the early termination of his spell in charge at Leverkusen.
