Article body
Manchester United FC, who could have gone top in England if results had gone their way, crashed to a 2-1 home defeat to Bolton Wanderers FC in round ten of the FA Premiership on Saturday. It was the champions’ second defeat at Old Trafford in four days.
Blistering free-kick
Sam Allardyce's side conceded their first away goal in five games when Juan Sebastián Verón smacked in a free-kick after 25 minutes. But ten minutes later Bolton midfielder Kevin Nolan volleyed his first goal since the opening day of the season to silence Old Trafford and revive memories of United's error-strewn defeat against RC Deportivo La Coruña in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.
Defensive mix-up
Then, six minutes from time, Michael Ricketts took advantage of another mix-up in the United defence to maintain Bolton's five-match unbeaten record away from home. It was the first time in Premiership history that United had taken the lead on their own ground and been beaten.
Held to draw
Arsenal FC are on top of the table after a six-goal thriller against Blackburn Rovers FC ended 3-3 at Highbury. Blackburn shocked the Londoners by going in front when Keith Gillespie beat Richard Wright at the near post, but Robert Pires equalised in the second half and then made a goal for Dennis Bergkamp. David Dunn stunned Arsène Wenger's men with a leveller, and although Thierry Henry looked to have made it safe Dunn made it all square with his second with a minute left.
Leicester lose
Dave Bassett's first home game in charge of Leicester City FC ended in disaster as Liverpool FC thumped them 4-1. The visitors were two up in ten minutes and Robbie Fowler grabbed a hat-trick with his first Premiership goals of the season. Sami Hyypiä headed the other and Dennis Wise notched Leicester's reply which will come as no consolation to Bassett, also beaten in his first game in charge last week at Chelsea FC.
Schmeichel on scoresheet
Aston Villa FC goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel got on the scoresheet but Everton FC ended their unbeaten record with a 3-2 win at Goodison Park, where Villa had not lost in six previous visits. Steve Watson scored against his old club, Tomasz Radzinski and man-of-the-match Thomas Gravesen put Walter Smith's side three up before Villa hit back through Moustapha Hadji and a last-minute Schmeichel volley.
Bounced back
West Ham United FC bounced back from their 7-1 pounding against Blackburn to beat Southampton FC 2-0 at Upton Park. Southampton were never in the hunt as Frederic Kanoute scored twice in the second half.
Goal for Euell
Derby County FC looked to have got new manager Colin Todd off to a good start at Pride Park when Fabrizio Ravenelli put them in front after 15 minutes. But Charlton Athletic FC battled back and Jason Euell made it 1-1 with his first Premiership goal since his move from Wimbledon FC.
