Switzerland: St. Gallen go second

FC St. Gallen leapfrogged FC Sion into second place in Switzerland’s Nationalliga A after beating the hosts 1-0 at the Tourbillon stadium on Saturday.

Chaile breaker
Argentinian defender Carlos Chaile grabbed the all-important goal after 76 minutes of a hard-fought clash. But St. Gallen remain three points behind leaders FC Basel and have played a game more than the pacesetters.

Basement battle
Lausanne-Sports moved off the foot of the table on goal difference after beating FC Luzern, consigning the home side to the basement position in the process.

Brazilian double
Ricardo Varela grabbed the opener for Lucerne but Charles Wittl hit the equaliser seven minutes before the break and Brazilian striker Leandro put his side ahead three minutes later. After a frantic second half, Luzern finally wrapped up the points when another Brazilian, midfield player Magelhaes, fired in the third three minutes from time.

Neuchâtel late show
Elsewhere, a late goal from Alex Tachie-Mensiah handed Neuchâtel Xamax FC a 2-1 win at FC Aarau.
