Italy round-up: Ronaldo on target

Members

Ronaldo scored his first goal in over two years as Internazionale FC won 3-1 at Brescia Calcio on Sunday to stay top of Serie A.

Dream pair
Inter coach Hector Cuper chose to play the 'dream pair', who cost Inter €85m in transfer fees, in tandem from the start for the first time since the Milan derby in October 1999. The move paid off in style with Ronaldo opening the scoring in the 19th minute and, although Igli Tare equalized for Brescia moments later, Vieri secured the win with two second-half headers.

Corini penalty
Second-placed AC Chievo Verona remain just two points behind Inter after they won 2-1 at home to US Lecce. A 77th-minute penalty from Eugenio Corini gave Chievo the three points - and maintained their 100 per cent home record - after Lecce's Sebastjan Cimerotic had cancelled out Massimo Marazzina's first-half goal.

Fuser wins it
AS Roma are level with Chievo on 26 points after they came from behind to win 2-1 at lowly Parma AC. Trailing to Marco di Vaio's 31st-minute goal, Roma turned the game around through goals from Marcos Assunção (49) and Diego Fuser (77).

Baronio sent off
Parma are in the bottom four with AC Fiorentina, who went down 3-0 at fourth-placed S.S. Lazio. Karel Poborsky, Hernán Crespo and Claudio López were on target for the Roman club against a Fiorentina side who lost midfielder Roberto Baronio - on loan this season from Lazio - to a red card shortly after the hour.

Shevchenko opener
Juventus FC drew 1-1 draw away to Milan AC after a second-half penalty converted by Alessandro del Piero cancelled out a 24th-minute opener from Milan's Andriy Shevchenko. The Ukrainian put the home side ahead when he beat Edgar Davids for pace, danced past two defenders and lofted a shot from wide on the edge of the area high over Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and into the top corner of the net.

Zalayeta wins penalty
But 28 seconds after the restart, substitute Marcelo Zalayeta tumbled in the box as he approached Ümit Davala and referee Gianluca Paparesta awarded the penalty from which Del Piero scored. The result leaves Milan in fifth place and Juventus sixth.

Torino beaten
Torino Calcio's run of three straight home wins came to an end as they were beaten 2-1 by Atalanta BC. Fabio Galante put Torino ahead on 13 minutes but Cristiano Doni equalised on the stroke of half-time and Corrado Colombo netted the winner 20 minutes from time.

Udinese fight back
AC Perugia got back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Serie A's bottom club, AC Venezia - Zisis Vryzas and Rahman Rezaei the scorers - while Udinese Calcio's upturn in fortunes continued with a 2-1 win over Hellas-Verona FC. Goals inside the final ten minutes from Roberto Muzzi and Giampiero Pinzi secured the three points for Roy Hodgson's side after Massimo Oddo had given Verona the lead.
