Spain round-up: Late strike lifts Alavés

Deportivo Alavés turned round a 1-0 deficit to secure their first win at Real Sociedad's Anoeta stadium and move second in Spain.

Kovacevic marks return
Real took an early lead through Yugoslavian forward Darko Kovacevic, making his second home debut after returning to the club from S.S. Lazio. Only seven minutes in, Oscar de Paula flighted an inch-perfect free-kick towards the Yugoslavia striker and he rose to head past the helpless Kike. The player dedicated his goal to his brother, who died of a stroke last month. "I have dedicated this goal to Zeljko as I promised," said Kovacevic.

Jordi equaliser
There were chances at both ends but, after Kovacevic had wasted two excellent chances inside a minute early in the second period, Alavés gained control. Former Netherlands international Jordi Cruyff equalised 12 minutes from time when he headed home from a Richard Witschge cross.

Late winner
Then, with four minutes remaining, Magno Morcelin met a cross to beat goalkeeper Sander Westerveld and secure the three points for Mané's side.

Real come from behind
Real Madrid CF are three points clear of Alavés after coming from behind to earn a 1-1 draw with Málaga CF. The Primera División's top side recovered from a poor first half  in which the home side took a deserved lead. After 25 minutes, Dely Valdes coolly stroked the ball past Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas to end a swift counterattacking move.

Improved performance
However, Vicente del Bosque’s side recovered their composure after half-time when Fernando Morientes outpaced the Málaga defence to head home a Roberto Carlos cross and give Madrid a share of the points.
