Lyngby told to carry on

The Danish Football Federation has rejected bankrupt Lyngby FC's plea to leave the Superligaen.

The Danish Football Federation (DBU) has rejected a request from bankrupt Lyngby FC to leave the Superligaen.

Amateur players
The decision will force the club to play the remainder of the season with a side made up of amateur players. Lyngby declared themselves bankrupt in November and have since applied to leave the top flight because they cannot afford to pay professional wages. Most of the senior players have since left the club, who are currently bottom of the table.

Too many problems
The DBU met on Saturday to discuss the Lyngby application and decided the knock-on effects of Lyngby's departure would cause too many problems. Matches already played might have had to be declared null and void. The federation said there was nothing in its constitution to allow Lyngby to quit the league, but said it would consider changing the rules in time for next season.

Restart in March
The Danish league resumes in March after the winter break with Lyngby – now made up of amateurs – two points adrift of Vejle BK. Lyngby said they would have preferred to be relegated to the Danish second division, but would abide by the DBU’s decision.
