Article body
Hayles winner
Fulham defeated last year's semi-finalists Wycombe Wanderers FC 1-0 thanks to a 67th-minute goal from striker Barry Hayles. Wycombe, a second division side, were denied victory at home to Fulham last week only by a late Steve Marlet equaliser, but their hopes of causing an upset were all but over when they lost Steve Cousins to a red card six minutes after Hayles's goal, following a foul on the same player.
McClaren to face Ferguson
Middlesbrough beat the 1988 winners Wimbledon FC 2-0 thanks to a third-minute Noel Whelan goal and an own goal by Irish international defender Kenny Cunningham nine minutes from time. The victory sends Middlesbrough into a fourth-round tie with Manchester United FC - a match that will pit former United coach Steve McClaren, the Middlesbrough manager, against his old boss, United's Sir Alex Ferguson.
Other ties
In the night's other FA Cup ties, York City FC beat Grimsby Town FC 1-0, Crewe Alexandra FC defeated Sheffield Wednesday FC 2-1 and Preston North End FC were 2-0 winners at Brighton & Hove Albion FC. Peterborough United FC earned a replay against Darlington FC after a 2-2 draw.
