Article body
Former England and West Bromwich Albion FC striker Jeff Astle has died aged 59.
Five caps
Astle, who was a member of the 1970 FIFA World Cup squad, was taken to the Queen's Hospital, Burton-on-Trent, after collapsing suddenly at his daughter's home on Saturday night. Capped five times by England, Astle scored in every round of Albion's FA Cup-winning season of 1968 including an extra-time winner when West Brom beat Everton FC 1-0 in the final.
Prolific for Albion
In all he scored 174 goals in 361 appearances for Albion, but had little luck in front of goal for England. He failed to score in five matches including a vital World Cup game against Brazil in the World Cup finals in Mexico when he looked certain to find the net from close range. The cause of death is not yet known, but police said there were no suspicious circumstances.
