KRC Genk striker Wesley Sonck was named Belgian Player of the Year 2001 at an awards ceremony in Ostend on Wednesday.
Golden boot
Sonck won the coveted Golden Boot ahead of Club Brugge KV midfield player Gert Verheyen and third-placed Walter Bassegio of RSC Anderlecht. The 23-year-old national team player, who has scored 21 goals in the Belgian first division this season, said he was "surprised" at the honour.
Pelé gives out prize
Sonck received the prize, which is voted upon by media and football personalities, from Brazilian legend Pelé, who said he hoped the Belgian would enjoy "a long successful career without injuries".
Record breaker
Anderlecht's Paul van Himst was chosen Belgian Player of the Year a record four times - in 1960, 1961, 1965 and 1974.
