FC Bayern München returned to winning ways at last in the German Cup quarter-finals but had to rely on penalties to beat 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
Tense match
Bayern triumphed after a tense match that needed extra-time. Yet Kaiserslautern will feel they should have won the game, especially as Brazilian midfield player Lincoln missed a 12th-minute penalty. However after a goalless 120 minutes, the game went to the lottery of spot-kicks with Kaiserslautern's Nenad Bjelica the unfortunate player to miss. Bayern netted with all five penalties to claim a place in the last four.
Thrilling fightback
1. FC Köln fought back for a famous 2-1 victory at Hertha BSC Berlin to book their place in the last four. Four minutes from normal time, Köln were trailing to a Bart Goor goal and on their way out of the competition. However Swiss defender Marc Zellweger equalised for the visitors to send the game into an extra 30 minutes. Then, just before the end of the first extra-time period, Dirk Lottner scored Köln's second to give his side victory.
Berbatov hits two
Bayer 04 Leverkusen were much more emphatic victors in their last-eight match, winning 3-0 at home against TSV 1860 München. However the UEFA Champions League hopefuls had to wait until the 66th minute for their first goal, Dimitar Berbatov breaking the deadlock. The Bulgarian striker then hit his second six minutes later and Thomas Brdaric put the game beyond 1860 nine minutes from time.
Schalke comfortable
Another team comfortably through to the semi-finals are FC Schalke 04, fresh from their 5-1 league victory over Bayern last weekend. They saw off second division side Rot-Weiss Oberhausen 2-0 in Wednesday night's final match. Schalke took the lead just after the half-hour mark through Jörg Böhme's penalty and Andreas Möller wrapped up the win with a goal four minutes from the end.
