Nine-man Arsenal fought their way to a thrilling 1-0 FA Cup fourth-round victory over ten-man Liverpool at Highbury on Sunday, with Dennis Bergkamp scoring the winning goal before getting his marching orders.
Three off
Arsenal's Martin Keown was sent off in the 67th minute for tugging Michael Owen's shirt, while Bergkamp and Liverpool's Jamie Carragher were dismissed four minutes later, the Dutchman for a bad tackle and the Liverpool defender after allegedly tossing an object back into the crowd.
Final heartache
Bergkamp headed Arsenal's winner in the 28th minute following a superb centre from Thierry Henry to ensure the London club a place in the FA Cup fifth round. Arsenal's victory comes just eight months after suffering heartache in Cardiff when Owen struck twice late on to clinch a memorable part of Liverpool's cup treble.
Missed chances
Owen missed the first chance of the game, shooting at the legs of goalkeeper Richard Wright after being sent clean through by Nicolas Anelka, returning to Highbury for the first time since he quit the club for Real Madrid CF. England striker Owen, the European Footballer of the Year, also had the last chance of the game, but Wright was again equal to the task.
Half-time lead
Two goals in a minute, the first from an Alan Shearer penalty, gave Newcastle United FC a 4-2 win at second division Peterborough United FC. Newcastle, finalists in 1998 and 1999, went ahead in the 14th minute through central defender Andy O'Brien. Jamie McClen increased Newcastle's lead three minutes before the interval when the ball fell to him after Craig Bellamy was tackled by Simon Rea.
Headed own goal
But a headed own goal by O'Brien from a cross by Marc Joseph four minutes into the second half brought Peterborough back into the game and they dramatically equalised through David Farrell. But that was the end of Peterborough's fightback. A scramble in the home box ended up with Leon McKenzie handling the ball and Shearer slotted home with seven minutes remaining despite goalkeeper Mark Tyler diving the correct way. The keeper had no chance when Aaron Hughes slotted home Newcastle's fourth a minute later.
City stun Ipswich
In Sunday's other match, first division Manchester City FC beat Ipswich Town FC 4-1 at Portman Road to secure their fifth-round berth. Israel international Eyal Berkovic opened the scoring with a fine long-range volley two minutes before half-time and Shaun Goater doubled the visitors' advantage with a cool finish after 65 minutes.
Goater double
Marcus Bent reduced the arrears for Ipswich with a deflected shot with seven minutes remaining but Goater pounced to slot home his second of the night and Darren Huckerby rounded Ipswich goalkeeper Andy Marshall to complete the rout in a frantic final four minutes.
